Professional Dispositions Assessment

Throughout my program of study I have had the opportunity to observe various grade levels

and teaching environments around the school district. One factor that has stood out to me the

most is the correlation between the teacher, the learning environment, and student outcomes. It

has become clear to me that it is just as important for the teacher to develop in character as it is

for students.

It is my hope that my students, their families/guardians, my colleagues, and anyone else I

come into contact with will see my passion for teaching. The way I plan to accomplish this is by

displaying professional dispositions in a purposeful manner each and every day. There are many

ways to actively demonstrate these dispositions within the classroom. Some of these ways

include: creating a safe and welcoming learning classroom environment, establishing high

expectations for all students; using a variety of instructional strategies and revising instruction

based on student needs; continually assessing students using informal and formal methods;

respecting and celebrating diversity within the classroom and community; and showing students

respect, sensitivity, patience, and a caring attitude. Another part of demonstrating dispositions is

through regular reflection and professional development. It is important to maintain regular

attendance, my professional appearance, and be open to regular assessment, feedback, and

constructive criticism.

Throughout my life I have learned many characteristics that I strive to demonstrate through

my words and actions when I interact with others, because I believe that although words may be

important, actions will ultimately reflect a persons’ true character. Within my course of study I

feel I have grown in the characteristics I already possess and I have learned new characteristics
that I have begun to develop within my professional career. It has become clearer to me during

this process that by continually and purposefully developing these dispositions, I can become a

better citizen and educator.

Although I have grown, there is always room to grow and develop further. In reflecting on

my self-assessment of dispositions, I realized that there are still some areas that I need to

continue to develop. I believe that the best way to improve in these areas is to engage in more

self-reflection and to become more purposeful in my instructional planning. By taking the time

to reflect and make a plan, I can accomplish my goals of improvement.
