VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SEMINAR (VLE)

The Center for Language Studies held a seminar titled "Implementing Moodle-
based Virtual Learning Environment" last August 5 and 6 of 2015 at Room 108 of New
Era University. This seminar conducted for the students of the College of Arts and
Sciences and College of Business Administration. They also invite the English Faculty to

The following reasons why some faculty members need to adopt the Virtual

2. It is a technology driven tool;
3. It is one of the teacher's responses to pedagogical shift;
4. It is a very effective educational support;
5. It is an attempt to deviate from the traditional teaching method ; and
6. It is required in accreditation.

The seminar is successfully arranged with the help of Mrs. Vivian Iglesia-Buhain
who's the one requested to make this seminar happen, and approved by our School's
President Dr. Nilo L. Rosas. With the help of the deans of the said colleges Dr. Orlando
Cabigting Jr. of CAS and Dr. Emilia Mananghaya of the CBA, they successfully held this

ATENEO CENTER FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE

TEACHING (ACELT)
The British council and Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT)
held a public lectured titled “Cognitive Architecture” and the Learning of Language
Knowledge on Dec. 5, 2015 from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m at Escaller Hall, Ateneo de
Manila University. Dr. Allan Water, a senior lecturer at Lancaster University, United
Kingdom, conducted a recent study of trends in language teaching pedagogy and he
identified a major professional dichotomy regarding preferred approaches to the
teaching of language “knowledge”. In general, it was shown that the theoretical
discourse of language teaching favoured a communicating-to-learn approach in the
matter (e.g task-based learning) whereas the practitioner world learns more towards a
learning to communicate approach.

Recent research and theorizing on the working on the memory on the relation to
the learning of the factual information was reviewed. On the basis of the
characteristics of cognitive architecture that describes this literature is taken to
indicate that long term memorization of knowledge is the key to skilled performance
and guided or direct instruction is superior to problem solving or discovery oriented
forms or pedagogy in facilitating the long term learning of factual information.
