INTRODUCTION

I. Rationale

Career mismatch is one of the alarming issues that people are facing in their

current lives. Career mismatch can happen when they are not sure of what course they

have and also by the influence of friends, family, and if possible financial problems.

Career mismatch started in the environmental aspects of a person due to

encouragement of different people. In this case, people search for environments that

would allow them to exercise their skills and abilities, and expressing their attitudes,

values and knowledge. This kind of problem where most of the people ended up makes

the country’s economy unstable. (e.g., Herr, 1997; Savickas, 2002).

A labor group has warned that the colleges and the vocational graduates will

struggle finding a job due to a growing mismatch between the training and the job skills

needed to be qualified by the most employers in the country and overseas. According to

TUCP-Nagkaisa that the Department of Labor and Employment Records shows that out

of the 4.23 million domestic and International jobs, vacancies offered in all the job fairs

in 2014-2015, they are only more than 391,000 were hired on the spot out of 1.29

million applicants. “This jobs-skills mismatch crisis in the country has been ongoing and

it continues to grow. Competition is getting higher so employers putting additional

qualifications into the job descriptions” TUCP-Spokesperson.

At this rate, career guidance will play an important role in our society. Career

Guidance aims to make students active jobseekers by helping them assess and market

their personal and professional strengths to be competitive in job market. Developing

the entrepreneurial mindsets by teaching students to build a network of personal

2

contacts, including the use of social network. Teach students to analyze and improve

their understanding of the skills they have acquired through their degree programs.

Create personal and professional development projects and teaching the basics of self-

marketing, or personal bonding. (www.luiss.edu/career.com).

The aforementioned situations aroused the participative researchers’ interest to

propose a project such as career guidance campaign to the goal to help the grade 10

students to explain and edify their mindsets in choosing the right course. The focus of

career campaign is to improve and help the student’s skills and their capability by

presenting some basic tools regarding to their subjective course. Provided herein are

the talks that could flicker the minds of the students particularly those upcoming Senior

High Students choosing Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Accountancy and

Business Management (ABM), Science and Technology Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM), Technical Vocational such as Hairdressing, Bread and Pastry, ICT and more

strand that the school has to offer. By this program, the students will be knowledgeable

enough to choose the right course that could fits their skills and capacity.
3

II. Theoretical Background

Most people especially students have a level of uncertainty on where to get help in

how to choose a career, according to Anderson (2013). That is why plenty of students

choose careers that are either preferred by their parents or pressured by peers.

However with the help of proper career guidance backed with career theories will help

students in choosing the right careers.

Holland’s Theory of Career Choice suggested that careers are determined by an

interaction between person’s personality and the environment. It maintains that in

choosing the career, people preferred job where they can be around others who are

liked them. They search for environments that will let them use their skills and abilities,

and express their attitudes and values, while taking an enjoyable problems and rules.

Behavior is determined by an interaction between personality and environment.

(“Holland’s Theory,”2017).

Holland’s theory is centered on the notion that most people fit into one of six

personality types: Realistic, Investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

He asserts that people of the same personality type working together in a job create an

environment that fits and reward their types. (“Holland’s Theory,”2017).

Watching what others do and the human thought process influences that careers a

person chooses in Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. This theory provides a

framework for understanding, predicting and changing human behavior. (“Bandura’s

Theory,” 2015)
4

Social Cognitive Theory follows first, attention: a person need to pay attention to

learn something new. The more striking or different something is the more likely it is to

gain a person’s attention. Second, retention; at this point person must be able to retain

what we have paid attention to imagery and language pay a rule in retention : he store

what he have seen the model doing in the form of verbal description or mental images,

and bring that triggers up later to help him reproduce the model with his own behavior.

Third, reproduction, at this point you have to translate the images or description into

actual behavior. You must have the ability to reproduce the behavior in the first place.

For instance, if you are watching Olympics ice skating you may not able to reproduce

their jumps if you can’t ice skate at all. Our abilities improve even when we just

imagined ourselves performing. Lastly, motivation, unless you are motivated, or have a

reason, you will not try to imitate the model. Bandura states a number of motives

including: pass reinforcement, promised reinforcement vicarious reinforcement.

(“Bandura’s Theory,” 2015)

On the other hands, Parson’s Theory also known as Trait Factor Theory of

Occupational Choice. At the centre of Parson’s Theory is the concept of matching.

Parson’s states that occupational decision making occurs when people have achieved:

an accurate understanding of their individual traits (aptitudes, interest, personal

abilities), a knowledge of jobs and the labor market, national and objective judgments

about the relationship between their individual traits, and the labor market. These three-

part theories still govern most current practice.

The trait and factor theories operate under the promise that it is possible to measure

both individual talents and the attributes required in particular jobs. It also assumes the
5

people maybe match occupation that’s a good fit. Parson’s suggests that when

individuals are in jobs best suited to their abilities they perform best and their

productivity is highest. (“Parson’s Theory,” 2016).

In addition, John Krumboltz’s planned happenstance theory makes it okay to not

always plan, because unplanned events could lead to good careers. He states that

indecision is desirable and sensible, as it allow the opportunity for clients to benefit from

unplanned events.

This emerging theory specifically addresses the need for people to deal with change

within rapidly changing labor market. Managing life transitions is seen as an essential

career management skill. Krumboltz’s theory offers insight on how to deal with the

limited degree of control we have over some career experiences. At the core of this

theory is the fact that unpredictable social factors, chance events and environmental

factors are important influences on client’s lives. As such, the counselors rule is to help

clients approach chance conditions and events positively. In particular, counselors

poster in their clients. First, curiosity to explore learning opportunities. Second,

persistent to deal with obstacles. Third, flexibility to address a variety of circumstances

and events and lastly optimism to maximize benefits from unplanned events. Krumboltz

states that people with these qualities are more likely to capitalize on dance events and

turn serendipity into opportunity (“Krumboltz’s Theory, 2016)

Moreover, Donald Super’s self concept Theory of career development. Influence the

idea that developing a sense of self and realize that you change over time is important

when planning your career. According to super self –concept changes over time, and

develops as a result of experience (“Super’s Theory, 2017)

6

Super argues that occupational preferences and competencies, along with an

individual’s life situations, all change with time and experience. Super developed the

Concept of Vocational maturity, which may or may not corresponds to chronological age

: people cycle through each of these stages when they go through career transitions

(“Super’s Theory, 2017)

Super states that in making a vocational choice individuals are expressing their self-

concept; or understanding of self-concept, or understanding of self, which evolves

overtime. People seek career satisfaction through work roles in which they can express

themselves and further implement and develop their self concept (“Super’s Theory,

2017).

Mabolo National High School, formerly known as Florencio Urot Memorial

National High School, is composed of one campus throughout the whole Cebu. The

campus is located in Juan Luna Ave., Cebu City. In 1981, the Cebu City Council

Honorable Florentino Solon as Mayor donated some 6,235 square meter parcel of land

to the residents of Mabolo. In 1985, the school Florencio Urot Memorial National High

School was erected in memory of the late undefeated city councilor, Florencio Urot who

was a resident of Mabolo. This school is an answer to urgent need of the youth in the

Cebu City North who wanted to pursue their studies in High School without paying a

high price for education. It started its operation in the School Year 1985-1986 with only

10 teachers and 289 1st year students who were residents of Mabolo and other nearby

Barangays.

Every year, the enrolment of students the different year levels increased in

number and teachers increased to its maximum number of 80, all civil services eligible.

Year 2010, the city council and unanimously approved the ordinance seeking to

change the name of the School from Florencio Urot Memorial National High School to

Mabolo National High School.

Mabolo National High School aims to be the first Cebu City North High School

working to become a world-class educational institution with excellent and professional

Human Resources committed to uplift the Academic standards for the better quality

education.
