BURGMASTER Model 1-D
BENCH MODEL TURRET DRILLING ANO TAPPING MACHINE

This manual is your introduction to the BURGMASTER MODEL 1-D Bench
Model Turret Drilling and Tapping machine and if thoroughly read,
wi 11 give you valuable information in the installation, operation
and servicing of the 1-D BURGMASTER.

The manual should be available to operators, foremen, maintenance men

and any other personnel that have dealings with the 1-D BURGMASTER,
so that should it be necessary to make minar adjustments, it can be
used for reference.

Quality materials and the finest engineering skill have been built
into the 1-D BURGMASTER Bench Model machine and with the proper care
a n d u s e , y ou a r e as s u r e d t r ou b 1e - f r e e , a c cu r a te a n d e c o n om i c a 1 o p e r a-
t íons for the li fe o f the mach i ne tool.

I NSTALLAT I ON:

A. Cleaning: At time of shipment, all exposed machined surfaces

', ...... .l are coated with a rust preventative ·. Before moving
either . the sl ide or the body, these surfaces should
be thoroughly cleaned to remove the rust preventa - ·
tive. This is extremely important since it pre~ents
any dirt and grit which may have accumulated on the
rust preventative from working under the s1iding
members and causing undue wear .

Mount feed handles and spindle guard, as per draw-

i ng.

B. Bring leads to the machine and fasten to terminais L-1, L-2,

L- 3, in electrical panel.

C. After power is brought to the machine. DO NOT INDEX THE TUR-

RET UNTIL VOU HAVE CHECKED DIRECTION OF ROTATION OF THE MOTOR.
Arrows on belt guard indicate correct direction of rotation.

D. Before the 1-D Burgmaster leaves the factory the turret head
and slide gear box are drained of lubricants. Two (2) pint
cans o f Mob i 1 Cear #632 are i ncl uded in eve .ry s h i pment.
The turret oil gage should show full to oil level with spindle
No. 2 in operating position. Fill hole is located between
spindle Nos. 4 and 5 on perimeter of turret head.
;": ;~
To test rotation of spindle, quickly jog ON and OFF switch
at front of table. Spindle should rotate in clockwise direc -
"' tion.

C. After the BURGMASTER has been in operation approximate1y 30

days, drain oi 1 out of the turret head and gear box, wash out
with kerosene or so1vent and refi11 to proper 1eve1 with correct
grade m·achine oil. Drain p1ug5 are at bottom of gear box, and
on perimeter of turret head. Fi11 ho1e is 1ocated between
spind1es Nos. 4 and 5 on perimeter of turret head.

SPINDLE SPEED SELECTION:

The spind1e 5peed sequence of the Mode1 1-D is broken up into two
ranges (high and 1ow), through the use of a two-step be1t drive 1oca-
tion at rear of machine. In each ·of the5e ranges two speeds per spind· ,

A. A high and 1ow speed rangeis provided by a two-step ''V 11 be1t

drive. To change speed range, remove be1t cover at rear of
machine, 1oosen 5/16 11 5ocket head cap screw and turn be1t

11

5peed for each 5pind1e. (See speed contro1 chart.)

C. Provi5ion is made so that the Turret Head wi11 a1way5 index

maximum 1ife and production. Located at the top of the U.

BlJ.RGMASTER r.IJouDAILLE

This shou1d be a11owed for, when setting up.

~
lf you find that the Turret Head indexes very quick1y or very
slow1y, it wi11 indicate that micro-switch no.A 10100500 is
not operating correct1y, or that togg1e switch no. A 10120500
at rear of magnetic pane1 is not in correct position.

SET UP PROCEDURE AS FOLLOWS:

A. Determine in what sequence you wish to mount your cutting

too1s on the turret head, not on1y from the operations to
be performed, but a1so from the spind1e speeds avai1ab1e
at each station.

B. Try to keep the overhang of a11 too1s as equa1 as possib1e

work. U~e BURGMASTER spind1e extensions to equa1 ize too1
1ength. They are avai1ab1e in 1engths of 1 11 , 2 11 , and 311 •

C. Mount cutting too1s i·n proper sequence in the chucks, sleeves,

tapping heads, etc.

D. Set head assemb1y to convenient working c1earance over the

·work by raising or 1owering body on columns . Loosen 1ocking
bo1ts and raise or 1ower by turning e1evating nut at top of
co1umns. When proper height is reached, re-1ock in position.

E. lndex machine through working cyc1e, setting depth stop screw

at each position to suit the work. The turret wi 11 index
automatica11y when s1ide is raised to the top position, actua-
ting the index mechanism. To repeat operations at one spind1e
without indexing, simp1y avoid raising the s1ide to the extreme
top.

F. To skip a station, or stations, first adjust depth-stop screw

down to shortest stroke to prevent feeding an un-used station.
A short downward and upward stroke of feed hand1e wi 11 a11ow
turret to index to next station.

G. Set the depth for each spind1e by adjusting stop b1ocks for
each spind1e. Use sca1e on right of co1umn for rough setting.
Move stop b1ock (part no. A 105810-00) to c16sest position
to depth stop bar no. A 101006-00. Make final adjustments
by 1oosening set screw, turning depth stop screw no. A 105811-00

NOTE: CHUCK MOUNTING FACE ANO SPINDLE SHOULDER SHOULD BE FREE OF DIRT
IN ORDER TO INSURE ACCURACY.

** CAUTION: Be sure the feed hand1e is held to prevent rapid

unwinding of the spring no. C 101753-00.
This cou1d break the spring or cause injury to
maintenance men.

3. Turn feed shaft, part no. C 10175200 counter clockwise

too much wi11 interfere with index of turret. lf
the head does not index comp1ete1y, shut off motor,
1oosen the 1ock nut and tap turret head with ma11et.

This is a de1icate setting, so proceed with care.
