Produkt

Produkt is the slab serif to the sans Graphik


family, falling into the tradition of adding slabs
to European Grotesk, creating an attractive and
functional companion serif typeface. Its serifs
are relatively short, particularly in the heaviest
weights, so it retains the compact proportions
and regular texture that characterize Graphik.

The idea of adding serifs at Graphik at first seemed
too simple and obvious, but demand from users of

BERTON HASEBE & Christian Schwartz the original made us speculate that it might be worth

exploring. Berton Hasebe’s early sketches had an
9 weights w/ ITALICS unexpected charm: the warmth of Graphik shone
Features through, with the shortness of the serifs keeping it

from looking clumsy. Hasebe then finished the family
FRACTIONS to match the full range of weights that make Graphik so

useful. The light weights are pretty, the middle weights
are functional, and the heavy weights have a feeling
of authority, all suffused with the appealing geometry
seen in Graphik.

Produkt Thin Berton Hasebe (born 1982) moved from Hawaii to


Produkt Thin Italic study and work in Los Angeles, obtaining a BFA
Produkt Extra Light from Otis College of Art and Design in 2005. In 2007
Produkt Extra Light Italic he moved to the Netherlands to study type design
Produkt Light through the Type and Media masters course at the
Produkt Light Italic Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Berton
Produkt Regular has resided in New York City since 2008, and was a
Produkt Regular Italic staff designer with Commercial Type from 2008 until
Produkt Medium 2013, when he left to start his own studio.
Produkt Medium Italic Berton’s typefaces have been awarded by the New
Produkt Semibold York and Tokyo Type Directors Club, the AtypI, and
Produkt Semibold Italic the BRNO Biennial, and in 2012 was awarded Print
Produkt Bold Magazine’s 20 Under 30 Award. He currently teaches
Produkt Bold Italic typography at Parsons School of Design and type de-

Produkt Super Christian Schwartz (born 1977) is a partner, along with
Produkt Super Italic Paul Barnes, in Commercial Type, a foundry based
in New York and London. A graduate of Carnegie
Mellon University, Schwartz worked at MetaDesign
supported languages
Berlin and Font Bureau prior to spending several years
working on his own before forming Schwartzco Inc.
Afrikaans, Albanian, Asturian, Basque, Breton, Bosnian, in 2006 and Commercial Type in 2008. Schwartz has
Catalan, Cornish, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, published fonts with many respected independent

Galician, German, Greenlandic, Guarani, Hawaiian, corporations and publications worldwide.

Italian, Kurdish, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Livonian, Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Mu-
