 7 Read the description of a hotel in Cabo
Polonio and underline three facts that do not
belong.
CP’s is a fantastic five star hotel in Cabo
Polonio. It’s near the beach and has got only
15 rooms with air conditioning and Jacuzzi.
The hotel cafeteria serves a good breakfast
between 7.00 and 9.30 am. The restaurant
is open at midday and in the evening but
doesn’t close at night because after 9 pm it’s
a disco! Both residents and tourists dance and
have a good time with excellent music and
light shows.
The food at the restaurant includes fish, pizza

Are you ready
for capoeira?
1 Read the article and answer the questions.
What is capoeira? Is it a kind
of music? Is it a dancing style? Capoeira is a Brazilian
martial art. It combines elements of dance and music.
Probably, Brazilian slaves and Brazilian native people
created it at the beginning of the 16th century. At that
time, people spoke Tupi language in Brazil and the word
‘capoeira’ comes from it.
In the 16th century, Brazil was a Portuguese colony
and Brazilians were slaves. Over the years, many
slaves escaped from their masters and lived in groups
in remote mountains. There, they invented capoeira, a
martial art they used to fight their enemies. Many slaves
returned to their masters, captured by slave hunters.
These slaves taught the art of capoeira to other slaves
but they disguised it into a form of singing and dancing.
In this way, they could practise capoeira and learn to
fight, and their masters didn’t notice.
Capoeira nowadays is not only a martial art but an
active exporter of Brazilian culture all over the world.
People travel to Brazil to learn it and capoeira masters
visit other countries to teach this art. They teach them
about ‘The Roda’. This is a game. Capoerists form a
circle and play musical instruments. Participants sing
typical songs and clap their hands following the music.
The traditional instrument for capoeira is the berimbau.
This is of African origin. It is about 1.5 m long. There are
many legends about the berimbau. One of them tells
about a beautiful young girl who was in a stream and a
villain killed her. Then her enchanted body turned into a
berimbau.
