SHIVLINGA AND NUCLEAR REACTOR

FEBRUARY 12, 2015

Lord Shiva who is considered as the God of Destruction and as well as Creation is a classic example of
symbolizing the study of nuclear physics and nuclear energy in a form that could be understood by common
man. To understand this, let us review some of the characteristics of Shiva

Shiva is called Bholenaath (the naïve one) who grants all the wishes of his disciples. He is often depicted as
performing a special form of dance called the Tandav Nritya or the Cosmic Dance. Now let us now
compare this to nuclear or atomic energy. This form of energy is one of the most efficient forms of
energies which will, just like Bholenath, help resolve all the energy problems of the world, whether it is
used to light up cities, power cars and automobiles or launch spaceships. This energy is always there at
our disposal and could literally grant all our wishes.

Now let us review the characteristics of Shiva Ling which is the symbol of Shiva. No other symbol or
construction could come closer to the construction of a nuclear reactor than the Shiv Ling. The Shiva
Ling is made up of 2 parts – a cylindrical structure made of smooth black stone and the grooves around
the cylinder with a characteristic spout. A pot of water hangs over the cylinder which drips water on the
cylinder at a continuous pace. This water flows out through the spout of the grooves circling the cylinder.
Only in Shiva’s temple, this water is not consumed as tirtha (holy water) as also no one is allowed to cross
the spout during the Pradakshina.

Now let us examine how this structure to that of a nuclear reactor. The cylindrical structure exactly resembles
the cylinder of a modern day nuclear reactor. The pot of water hanging above resembles the water needed to
cool down the reactor as it heats up during the energy generation process. The grooves around the cylinder
represent the structures built to dispose the polluted water from the reactor. This water is not consumed exactly
for the same reason – it is polluted with radiations and nuclear waste.

SHIVA THE GREATEST SCIENTIST OF HIS TIME

Check out this picture of Shiva.
Observing the Shiv Lingam people have tried to resemble it with different things but the closest it.

Comes to resemble is the Nuclear Reactor in shape and under the conditions it is kept.

Nuclear Reactors are usually Dome shaped and has a platform it rests upon similar to the lingam, Also notice
that the Shiv Ling always have water dropping on it which is the same conditions a nuclear reactor is kept.

Shiva is considered as a Creator and Destructor at the same time. Nuclear energy is constructive and destructive
at the same time.

Shiva Temples are always built near water bodies same conditions apply for a Nuclear Plant.

The water flowing from the lingam is not used as prasad giving the indication that the water is contaminated and
should flow away.

This is just another way of looking at the Hindu Gods. The one that fascinates me the most is Shiva…. I have
always seen him as the Greatest Scientist of his time. This is an attempt to give reasons to my opinion on Shiva
the Great Scientist.

Before I start giving reasons ..I would like my readers to think of a Airplane. Since we all have seen a airplane
its quiet easy to imagine it right. Now try explaining it to a person who has never seen one, obviously it would
be something like a bird with people sitting on it… that is what will be the imagination of a person who has
never seen it before.

Keeping the above example in mind think of all Ramayan and Mahabharata stories. This I will cover in other
articles in detail. Right now my focus is Shiva.

Shiva is considered to be the most powerful as well as the most destructive God or Deity. There are 3 different
ways Shiva is portrayed.

1. As a person with snake in his neck with a Damroo and Trishul in his hands and Ganga flowing from
his Head.
2. As Shiv Ling
3. Nataraja
The Story of Shiva is he is married to Parwati and has 2 sons Ganesh and Subramanium.
The part of history that attracted me to Shiva and actually got me going on this subject is about him putting a
head of Elephant on his son Ganesha and a Goat head for this Father-in-Law. Ganesha story most people know
but the story of Himavat is in the Amar Chitra Katha , it goes like this that Shiva was invited to a yajna to
Himavat’s palace and while Shiva was seated Himavat didn’t look at him and so Shiva got angry and cut off his
head and after seeing Parvati crying for her father he put a Goat head to Himavat and saved his life.
Replacing heads at 2 different occasions makes Shiva the greatest Surgeon of his times.

When we talk about Thomas Edison this is the kind of picture people paint for this great scientist who gave us
the light Bulb.

So when someone makes an invention they are remembered not only by their face or picture but also a picture of
their invention is added to their picture profile.

You might ask what I am getting at. Here it comes….. If Shiva was the greatest Scientist of his times then his
picture should also show a symbol or a picture of his inventions right. That’s how human mind portrays things.

“LINGAM” IS ONE OF THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD MOTIFS OF
HINDUISM”

“Lingam” is one of the most
misunderstood motifsof Hinduism. It has been subject to such a bad smear campaigning by Westerners,
especially missionaries, which even Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as a stylized phallic symbol. The
expression ‘linga’ in the Agama context signifies ‘symbol’ (chinha). Derived from the root ‘ligi gatyau’, it refers
to movement, and words having been movement as their etymological meaning have also connotations of
knowledge (‘sarve gatyarthah jnanarthah’). Linga therefore means that by which the Divine is cognized or

approached (‘lingyate jnayate anena iti lingam’).

The Agama texts also bring out another valid explanation for the word ‘linga’: linga in its primary sense is
broken up into ‘ling’ (to dissolve, to get merged, to destroy) and ‘ga’ (to emerge, to go out). Linga is so called
because all phenomena are dissolved in Siva at the time of cosmic dissolution, and it emerges from Siva once
again at the time of creation. (Ajitagama, 3, 16-17).

Thus Shiva Linga represents the mark of the cosmos.

It also dispels another myth in which Shiva is considered only as a destructor. Hindus visit the temples not just to respect Gods but also to energize themselves with positive energies. Shiva Lingam is a differentiating mark. Milk of Indian cow when poured on Shiv Lingam reciting mantras. And such misinterpretation may actually be welcome by skeptics. Shiva Lingam is state of God just before manifestation of Universe. Shiva Lingam is the mark of Shiva the creator. Another authentic reference comes from Skanda Purana where lingam is clearly indicated as the supreme Shiva from where the whole universe is created and where it finally submerge. it is certainly not a s*x mark. Before that. Jalhari has three lines because three signifies “multiple” in Sanskrit. Har (Shiva) is unattached and in meditation in the Himalayas. Brahma is similar in nature. Our rishis imagined that this ling has Har (neutron) and Hari (proton) inside. it was imagined as a et of two spiral interwined staircases. Har is shiva. The properties suggested for DNA by modern science had also been suggested in our scripture. Har is neutral and is sitting in the nucleus with all the energy. To describe more complex DNA. Our rishis had imagined this round mound. Everything is created by protons and electrons and electrons play the major role. Brahma is tied with Haari by a thread through his navel and cannot go too far.the 3D structures with movements on TV. which might model DNA. a clay mound for a statue and a store mound for a sculpture. They concluded that it was helical. In our atomic structure. He is attached with Hari after creating nature and looks after nature. and Brahma (electron) spins around them in the form of Jalhari. but its DNA will exist in one form or another. . The rishis also said that it was the base structure and entire nature began with it. the Shivling. This was determined by our rishis to be the fundamental and elemental point with which any life form could being. Our rishis saw this structure through their meditation and explained it the same way modern science explains DNA. for example. According to our rishis. shiva and Vishnu are present in this Ling. produced itself. So the Shivling is not just a mere symbol. An object can be destroyed. The rishis imagined that Prajapati must have created a mound first. Shiva has the energy within as long as Shiva is in meditation. A change in the number of electrons changes the dimensions and properties. You have to make a mound before creating anything. there are protons and neutrons which are surrounded by fast spinning electrons. Our rishis wanted to give a message to the masses that you can see the smallest form of nature in the form of the Shivling. and according to our scriptures. He becomes destroyer when necessary. a pair of snakes wrapped around each other can be visualized to represent a double helix. was wrapped with a snake. it first originated from Lord Shiva. The Shivling represents the atomic structure. When they created the Shivling it was imagined that there was one Hari and one Har in the ling. as rishis explained. and Hari is Vishnu. Modern science corroborates the findings of our scriptures that DNA is like a thread and is so small that it can not be seen with naked eyes it reproduces itself by multiplying itself and cannot be destroyed. Energy is released by breaking the nucleus also known by our modern science as atomic fission.

is always with him. Water is constantly sprinkled on the Shivling to control Shiva’s temper. “Shiva” also means that in which the creation lies dormant after the annihilation. This water from the Shivling is not used as prasad or even as holy water. So. is enormously powerful. Once he is happy. . The hard water and soft water are formed there. It is intended to bring the shapeless unknown into our attention. Linga basically means a sign or symbol. you will see the mound. he can release this energy. It is described in the Mahabarat by Maharishi Vashishtha that he saw this Rudrani . a destructive force is released. The force of Shiva . which we call Rudrani. If a neutron is separated from its nucleus. One who has power can pass it on to others and anyone can receive it. One cannot go around the Shivling as it is beyond a human being to really go around or comprehend this tremendous power. shiva is referred to as “bhole” meaning simple and can be pleased by little worship. This energy is indeed the atomic energy as explained by the modern science. just like if this surrounding energy is separated from Lord Shiva . There is a colossal energy constantly dancing around Lord Shiva. it is supposed to represent the nuclear reactor. no one can save you. So the lingam is essentially a symbol of the shapeless universal consciousness of Lord Shiva. This water from Shivling flows freely from the jalhari in a stream from a corner of the Ling. who blinded his eyes. So the linga is the shapeless symbol for the great god of auspiciousness. Shiva is pleased very easily and at the same time. the potential but unmanifest ingredients of the material world. In terms of modern science. One thing you may be questioning is why Lord Shiva is so often represented as a lingam.Once we make Shiva angry which can be compared to breaking the nucleus. This is in the reality pictures taken fron space show a clear picture of Shivling as described in our scriptures. We can see the smallest form of this in a Shivling and also the colossal form in our galaxy. reflecting a nuclear reactor. This dance can be compared with electrons spinning and revolving around the nucleus. This water becomes radioactive. This also shows humans their limitations within which we need to live. You must have seen that the nuclear reactors resemble a Svivling in the shape like a mound. Another explanation is that Shiva means auspicious. which is called the Shivling and the jalahari around it. If you look at the pictures of nebulae or galaxies. This could be compared to the water used for cooling the nuclear reactors which is also not used for nay other purposes. It was so powerful and huge that he could not see the beginning or end and even after running with his mind till the end of time. the energy is released in the form of Durga. If Lord Shiva desires. Still one must follow the right path for if you are on a wrong path even by mistake and Shiva is not pleased with you. one explanation is that the lingam is a representative of the dormant universal consciousness in which all created things rest after the cosmic annihilation. It also represents the pradhana. He saw a huge black shadow dancing in the sky around Lord Shiva. One should worship him only after understanding his great power. he gives boons without thinking of the worshipper’s worthiness. and all the radioactive particles are constantly kept under water. It is critical that you understand the colossal power of Shiva.

You are simply gently suggesting the energy to move in this direction. -continue till you feel comfortable. you will start to feel the energy rising. Do this for the inhale.
