School 2.0 Map by Stanford Research International

“There is no one path to the school of tomorrow. Technology is rapidly breaking down
school walls and letting the world in; harnessing it is key to building tomorrow's
schools and students. Integrating it into the learning ecosystem is everyone's
responsibility, and will ensure multiple paths to success.”
IB School 2.0 in 2009

Moving Beyond CAS – Building out ManageBac with our first step into MYP and the IB

• As the IB moved towards on-screen marking of exams, in July 2008, plans for e-Submission
were announced starting with Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Visual Arts.
Evolution of the Learning Management System
A brief history of the systems development and technology adoption from University to K-12

1st wave 2nd wave 3rd wave

Client-Server Generic Curriculum First

1995 - 2006 2007 - 2012 2013 - 2017

• Learning Management Systems (“LMS”) developed in the late 1990s with rising Internet adoption in Higher
• Early LMS providers such as Blackboard provided a generic, one-size fits all solution
• In 2007-2009, a second wave of new SaaS LMS providers entered the market with freemium-driven models,
ultimately leading to wider generic LMS adoption in K-12
• In the context of international schools, curriculum, assessment & reporting requirements from Standards & Practices
were fundamentally different – we observed that the systems were not built for purpose, but were instead re-
purposed to suit international schools
East is East, West is West
Applying a Chinese Framework for Systems Development in International Schools
In summary … the West prefers to be independent,
the East interdependent.

Nisbett’s research also showed (p 109) that modern

view the world in holistic terms: they see a great

deal of the field, especially background events; they
regard the world as complex and highly changeable
and its components as interrelated; they see events
as moving in cycles between extremes; and they
feel that control over events requires coordination
with others.

- George Walker, IB Position Paper (2010)

• Confucian circles of responsibility: Returning to IB DP Chinese

• How did we apply the ATL skill Transfer to this model for our systems development?

1. Confucian circles reflect the interconnections in the international education system

2. Self = Student / Teacher, Family = School / School Group, Community = Network of
IB / International Schools, Country = Regional Associations, World = IB / Exam

Global Data Protection & Security Update
Our Technical Operations team maintains and supports ManageBac infrastructure and applications
24/7/365 – this is an overview of our key improvements for 2018

• Amazon Web Services provides High Availability and Multi-Region Hosting

Completed in December 2017, this greatly improves systems reliability and provides enhanced
flexibility of hosting for schools, which will become more important with the introduction of
GDPR in May 2018.

• Data Protection & Security:

We are one of the only international education systems providers with ISO/IEC 27001:2013
Information Security Management System certification, as well as being GDPR compliant which
reflects our commitment to strong information security and data protection.

• System Monitoring:
We use comprehensive real-time monitoring and analytics tools to monitor our network and
applications. Automated alerts are routed to on-call operators.

• Hardened Network:
We utilize enterprise-grade Denial of Service protection from Cloudflare in conjunction with
application firewalls to protect our networks from interruption or compromise.

• Penetration Testing:
We regularly perform third-party penetration testing to ensure our applications and
infrastructure are secure.

• Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans:

All areas of our technical operations are covered by our 24-72 hour DR / BCP. In the event of a
catastrophic event, our plans aim to restore critical services within 24 hours and be fully
operational within 72 hours.

Schools, entrusted with the critical duty of guiding students to the right post-secondary
destinations, are too frequently hampered by the need to navigate multiple systems,
track a broad range of student needs, and manage the administration and paperwork
that universities in different countries require. This presents an enormous challenge
for college and career advisors.

We believe that enabling schools to provide smart, modern university and careers
guidance is a matter of huge importance. Partnered with schools in over 60 countries
and designed specifically with IB World Schools in mind, BridgeU empowers schools
to prepare the students of today for the world of tomorrow.
