Production of Diesel from Plastic

Few months back in a regional TV Channel, a story about extracting petrol from
plastic is aired. Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun scientists have made experiments
on extracting petrol from plastic and succeed in that process. It looks like amazing. It is
great achievement by our scientists.
A company in Scotland worked on this process and they are commercially extracting
Diesel and Kerosene from plastic. Without any harm to environment, they are working on
this process. Few more European countries also are trying to clear the plastic and
converting into fuels useful for them. Even some amount of electricity can produce in this
process. It is also useful in clearing plastic waste from our surroundings.
How useful this process in solving Environmental Problems?
Plastic covers and bottles won’t decompose in earth so easily. Every day we are
getting hundreds of tons of plastic waste throughout AP. If we utilize some amount of this
resource, we can get good results. If the results are good with respect to investment and
pollution free the same can implement to make plastic waste free AP. It is time for the
Government to concentrate on non-conventional resources which we feel waste are to made
good use and get benefit from them. Even this process won’t release any harmful gases into
environment. So far this kind of technology is not available in India, but it is not too tough
to implement.
Example to explain the production of diesel from plastic
Cynar is a Scotland based company is working on this process. The details are given
below. (cynarplc.com)
Cynar Technology gives new life to end of life plastic in the form of alternative synthetic
fuels. We provide a commercially profitable and environmentally sustainable means of safely
turning end of life plastics into liquid fuels that are direct import substitutes for fossil fuels.
From 1 tonne of end of life plastic, we create approximately 1,000 litres of liquid fuel:
 700 litres Diesel,
 100 litres of Kerosene,
 200 litres of Lite Oil (collectively "CynFuel").

Acceptable Plastic Feedstocks
 2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). Examples: Crinkly shopping bags, freezer bags,
milk bottles, bleach bottles, buckets, rigid pipes and crates.
 4 LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene). Examples: Garbage bags, squeeze bottles, black
irrigation tubes, films and garbage bags.
 5 PP (Polypropylene). Examples: Trays, potato bags, drinking straws, containers,
tubs, plastic garden settings, baby baths and plastic boxes.
 6 PS (Polystyrene). Examples: Trays, yoghurt & dairy containers, vending cups and
produce boxes.
Non-Acceptable Plastic Feedstocks
 PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate). Examples: Soft drinks bottles, food grade
packaging and trays.
 PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). Examples: Pipes, window fittings, bottles and laminates.
 Other Examples: Foams, nylons and fiberglass.
With a capacity of 50 tons plastic waste processing, 2 plants can be started.
As per the company details,
1 ton plastic waste yields 800 liters of Diesel
200 liters of lite oil
For 100 tons of plastic waste 80,000 liters of Diesel

Let us consider 350 working days in a year. In the yard, stock of 150 – 200 tons of
plastic waste is kept in each plant.
For 1 year (350 working days):
350 x 80,000 = 2.8 crores
Current market price of 1 liter diesel is between 57 and 58 in South India. For
calculation purpose, we consider 1 liter price as 55/-.
Let the production cost of diesel from plastic waste is 25/-.
Normal Price From Plastic
2.8 crores x 55 = 154 Crore rupees 2.8 crores x 25 = 70 crore rupees
Savings: 154 crores – 70 crores = 84 crore rupees
It is a non conventional method to produce diesel. So, state government will ask the
central government to give subsidy on diesel produced.

If subsidy per liter is 10/-, then
2.8 cr liters x 10 = 28 crore rupees
If subsidy per liter is 5/-, then
2.8 cr liters x 5 = 14 crore rupees
Total benefit from this project is
@ subsidy 10/- 84 cr + 28 cr = 112 crores
@ subsidy 5/- 84 cr + 14 cr = 98 crores

After 1year, the amount they getting is almost 100 cr. That means, it is a useful
project for state government, RTC and Central Government. Why for Central Government?
The foreign exchange will be saved on the 2.8 cr liters of diesel. Once the initial project
gives good yields in terms profit and product, state government will look for such projects in
future. Depending on the availability of the plastic waste, another 2 – 4 plants can be
started.
After 4 – 5 yrs of time, RTC will stop purchasing diesel from oil companies and will
get its own produced diesel at low price. This will show impact on profits of RTC and also on
ticket pricing. Once the oil expenditure is reduced, RTC is ready to cut down the ticket
prices. With this people will get good journey with low pricing.
If this project is successful in our state, few more states will show interest and ready
to do the same in their states. If this happens, India itself will start producing diesel from
plastic waste and also tyres. Huge amount of foreign exchange will be saved and this
amount can be used for welfare of the people of India.
With implementation of this project, the goal of Swach AP can be achieved with in
stipulated time and can have more money to serve the people of India.
The major objective of the state organizations is welfare of the people of state and
earning the profits like private companies.
Inputs to start the plants
1. The data of plastic waste collected every day by each and every local body in the state.
2. Making a feasibility study by discussing details of land requirement, plant construction
cost, man power needed, etc.
3. Searching for a suitable place and land to allocate for plant.
4. Permissions from Government agencies like Pollution Control Board.
