SELF EVALUATION AND REFLECTION RE: CLINICAL PERFORMANCE

STUDENT: LINDSAY RISCH

I think my strengths in clinical are as follows:

1. Communication. In my clinical experience, I believe I have developed strong communication
skills. By understanding the importance of communication in the clinical setting, I have worked at
ensuring that I am always effectively communicating with my clients, my classmates and teacher,
and the other nurses on the unit.
2. Using the inter-professional team as a resource. Through my clinical experience, I have been able
to successfully recognize where my strengths are as a student practical nurse, and where my
limitations are in terms of my skills and abilities. I think I have been able to understand when to
reach out to the various inter-professional team members (nutritionist, physician, physiotherapist,
social worker, etc) so that the client is able to meet their unique health related goals.
3. Coming to clinical prepared. The night before each clinical day, I review my notes from my
previous clinical experience. I come to clinical with my drug cards, organizational chart, and any
other information or tools that are necessary for that day. Through being prepared for clinical, I
believe this helps me to help my clients reach their health goals.

I think my area’s for improvement in clinical are as follows:

1. Documentation. As I continue to have more opportunities to document, I will further develop
skills in this area. Through clinical so far, I have had the opportunity to document using both
electronic and written methods, as well as using DAR, SOAP notes and narrative formatting. That
being said, as I continue to gain more experience, I will inevitably continue to grow in this area.
2. Prioritizing and organizing. While this has been an area of improvement for me, I continue to
work on ensuring I am organized and prioritizing my care. While this can be somewhat
challenging now with two clients, it will inevitably become significantly more challenging as I
am assigned a larger client load in the future. As I get more experience with nursing, I will
continue to develop the skills to organize and prioritize my care.
3. Confidence in problem solving skills. As a student nurse, I sometimes find myself unsure of my
assessments or decisions in the clinical setting. By checking with classmates, nurses or my
clinical teacher I am able to gain reassurance and develop confidence in my abilities. With
continued experience, this confidence will continue to grow.
