APPLICATION LETTER

I.- basic ideas

What?

 A motivation letter is used to request a job. It is sent to the human resources department of a company to apply
for a job.
 It must be complemented with the curriculum vitae (CV) and it serves as presentation to the person in charge of
the selection process. Its objective is to show a more human part of the applicant and to summarize his personal
and academic qualities.
 This document is different from the CV and therefore has to provide other content. We should not repeat in the
letter what already appears in our curriculum.
 In the letter we must highlight only those points that are more important for the vacant position, and moreover,
we must explain our personal motivation to request such a position. It is fundamental to adapt it to the position to
which you aspire, avoiding to deliver something neutral and without personality.

Characteristics

 Simplicity: The wording should be clear, simple and orderly

 Correct: Spelling and grammar should be flawless
 Respectful: Use a friendly and polite tone but not colloquial or very direct.
 Concrete. Referring only to issues related to the company and the vacancy that you are interested
about.
 It must be a reflection of your personality, so that the interviewer can get to know you a little more
after reading your CV.

Estructure

Ideally, the letter should not be too long and the structure should be in three specific parts:
1. Introduction: Emphasizing your strengths: academic training, personal skills and briefly explanation of your
personal interest in the position.
2. Development: It is the most extensive paragraph of the motivation letter. You must expand the information
about your training and the reasons for what you are the best candidate for this job. It explains what you can
contribute to the company and highlights some personal skills that can be useful in the job position.
3. End: The motivation letter must be closed indicating the willingness to expand all the information offered in a
personal interview. The farewell must be a very formal expression.

Mistakes to avoid
Do not forget, the success of your selection could depend on how good your motivation letter is. For that reason, you must
not only pay attention to the elements that must contain, but also those errors that should be avoided:

 Avoid being overly flattering or overreacting your gratitude.

 Acronyms and abbreviations can create confusion.
 Do not be narcissist. You must strengthen your virtues but not be pedantic.
 Leave passive and conditional verbs for another time.
 Try not to start sentences with "I".
 Do not commit spelling or grammatical mistakes.
 Take care of the presentation (margins, separation between paragraphs ...)
