TD-LTE Functionalities and Features Overview

Drivers for TD-LTE - Unpaired Spectrum

• 4G spectrum provide unpaired bands

• WiMAX as option for new entrants and fixed line operators increases
pressure on 3GPP
• Cellular operators expect synergies in operation of paired and unpaired
spectrum
• NGMN operators required TDD mode of operation in LTE
• CMCC as main driver for TD-LTE promotes migration from GSM and TD-
SCDMA to LTE supporting FDD and TDD modes
• Also LTE-advanced will support TDD mode for handling capacity
demands

TD LTE and FDD LTE General Differentiation

• TDD uses same frequency band for transmission

and reception and can be deployed in an unpaired
band
– FDD uses different paired bands
• TDD supports bandwidths from 1.4MHz up to
20MHz although not all of them are available in all
frequency bands
– 2.5GHz bands not likely to support the smallest
bandwidths
• TDD available bandwidth is shared between uplink
and downlink, easier to implement Beamforming
feature by utilizing channel reciprocity.

• Sites need to be synchronized

(coordinated deployment) to avoid
interference
– FDD does not need eNodeB
synchronization because of the duplex
separation
