Students have already watched this video that identifies the unique jobs
of various community helpers including paramedics, police officers, fire-
fighters, mail people, and more.

Standards History/Social Studies:


Learning and Working Now and Long Ago
K.1 - Students understand that being a good citizen involves acting in
certain ways.
a. Learn examples of honesty, courage, determination, individual
responsibility, and patriotism in American and world history from
stories and folklore.

K.3 - Students match simple descriptions of work that people do and the
names of related jobs at the school, in the local community, and from
historical accounts.

Students will be able to identify responsibilities of firefighters in the local


Objective community. After listening to the story, “Firefighters,” by Norma Simon,
students will color in job icons on a worksheet relating to a firefighter’s
job to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the job.
For this lesson, the teacher will provide:
Modifications/ Scaffolds ● Read-aloud of picture book (with brief pauses for quick class
discussions) that highlights the responsibilities of a firefighter
● Demonstration of firefighters at work in current event pictures
● Model and discuss worksheet icons (scaffolding)
● Visual icons on worksheet
● Model an example of Thank You card (scaffolding)
● Sentence frames for Thank You cards
This list will additionally help any English learners in the classroom. Stu-
dents at this grade level have not been identified with special needs.
However, for students who are being monitored for ADHD, a possible
modification to aid in their achievement would be to complete different
parts of this lesson in various areas of the room. This would provide the
students with an opportunity to stand up and move around as it is diffi-
cult for them to remain seated and focused for extended periods of time.

Model:
Students are on carpet.
Pictures of job icons are on whiteboard and students and teacher sort
the icons related to firefighters.

Directions: Color the icons related to firefighters

Procedures- CLOSE Students will receive a worksheet with icons from different community
(Formal Assessment) jobs. Students will color in the icons that are associated with firefighters.
The teacher will collect the worksheet to formally assess student com-
[Time Allotted: 10 Minutes] prehension.

*As a culminating task, students will create thank you cards for firefight-
ers. (Refer to bottom)

Informal Assessment Students will be informally assessed throughout this lesson on their un-
derstanding of the concepts and information by “checking-in” with a
thumbs up/down. Additionally, the teacher will be paying attention to
body language and facial expressions for indications of confusion or un-
derstanding. Lastly, students will demonstrate their understanding
through verbal responses to questions asked about the video or content
related to firefighter’s job.

Culminating Task Thank You cards for firefighters

[Time Allotted: 10 Minutes] The teacher will model an example of a Thank You card and provide
sentence frames for the students. Students will include an illustration on
the Thank You cards for the firefighters. The class will send them to the
local fire station.
