TWENTIETH 1997–2017 ANNIVERSARY

Café Reason is an experimental performance group
specialising in butoh, the iconoclastic dance form that originated
in postwar Japan. Based in Oxford, it is the only permanent
regional butoh company in the UK, and has achieved a fine
reputation for its innovative theatre, site-specific and improvised
performances. From its inception Café Reason has been
committed to an ongoing process of exploration. Its work aims
to extend the boundaries of perception and the interpretation
and expression of universal human experience.

Café Reason was the inspiration of Jeannie Donald-McKim,
who together with Ayala Kingsley, Fabrizia Verrecchia, and others
began the group with their performance of Bona Dea at Freud
Café in December 1997. Joined by Ana Barbour in 1999,
over the next 10 years the group went on to produce a series of
acclaimed shows at the Pegasus Theatre: Echo, Erosion,
Guess-station, The If Path, and Precarious Footing, as well as
numerous site-specific performances, including a monthly
‘Millennium Walk’ throughout 2000.

With thanks to Paul Freestone and many others for 20 years of photography.

TWENTIETH 1997–2017 ANNIVERSARY

“Butoh is an ongoing investigation: Who am I in this moment?
How is my body? What is reality? It seeks to answer these
questions with physical authenticity; but with a performance
medium there is also a contract between audience and
performer. For me, this is an agreement to seek to reveal
something essential about what it is to be a human being. Butoh
is a way of exploring the territory between inner and outer
worlds and expressing the essence of the shifting boundaries.”
Jeannie Donald-McKim

Café Reason’s members come from many backgrounds,
contributing their different bodies, skills, and life experience.
Between 2007 and 2017, joined by a succession of new dancers,
the group went on to create and perform a large body of
original, often cross-genre work, in association with improvising
musicians and other artists, each time breaking new ground:
Orpheus (the rock-opera); Matrix, curating the best of its popular
‘Diamond Night’ arts evenings; The Heart’s Desire, based on six
15th-century tapestries and using the dancers’ voices;
the dreamlike Dolls’ House; and now Limina.
