1. PBT (Paper Based Test)

PBT is one of version of the TOEFL test. PBT is popular type which is held in
educational institutions and tutoring places. We do the test like a regular test. The
total test time is approximately three hours. TOEFL PBT consisted of four sections:

Section 1: Listening comprehension. This section measure the ability to understand

English as it is spoken in North America. The material and oral question are
recorded and we should answer with the options are printed in the test books.

Section 2: Structure and written expression. This section aims to measure

grammatical structure ability. The sentence’s topic is general.

Section 3: Reading comprehension. This section aims to measure the ability to read
and understand short passage. We should answer several questions about passage.

Section 4: Writing. In this section we have one topic. We should write an essay
approximately 250-300 words.

2. CBT ( Computer Based Test)

CBT is the type of TOEFL test is becoming less popular. It is beginning 1998 as
an alternative of PBT. During the Listening session, participants use headphones and
they can’t repeat repeat the previous question if left behind. The total duration of
this test is about 4 hours. There are two section of the test : Listening and Structure.
The test started with moderate questions. Participants answer each question, and the
computer scored the question and used that information, as well as the responses to
previous questions, to determine the question it would present next. If the
participants give the respond correctly, the computer typically selected questions of
greater or equal difficulty. If the participants give the respond incorrectly, the
computer typically selected questions of lesser or equal difficulty. The computer was
 programmed to continuously fi nd questions of an appropriate diffi culty for test
takers of all performance levels.
3. iBT (Internet Based Test)

At the end of 2005, iBT has replaced the position of CBT and PBT. iBT was
introduced for the first time in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and
Italy. iBT consist of four session to measure language skill that focus on language in
the academic fields. There is not grammatical test in iBT but we must learn grammar
to complete the command in iBT test. iBT consisted of four session :

a. Reading section: This section consist of 3 to 5 readings and followed by several

question about the reading. The theme of the readings is academic. Participants
will be asked about key ideas, reading details, conclusions, important
information, vocabulary, etc.

b. Listening section: This section consist of two conversation or academic

discussion. Participants will be given one conversation. Each conversation
followed by 5-6 question This questions aims to measure participants' ability to
understand key ideas, important information details, implications, interrelated
ideas, information unity.

c. Speaking section: This section consists of 6 exercises. Two exercises is

independent and 4 exercise is interrelated exercise. Participants should give
opinion about familiar topic in independent exercise. In interrelated exercise,
participants are asked to read short passages, listen to academic lectures or
conversations about lecture life, and answer questions. The response of
participations will be digitally recorded and evaluated by three to six experts.

d. Writing Section: The section aims to measure writing’s ability. This section
consisted of 2 exercises. The first exercise is related exercise and the second is
an independent exercise. Participants must read an academic-themed passage
and then they must listen discussion about the theme. Participant will write a
conclusion about the key points. In independent exercise, participants must write
an essay that support participant’s opinion.
