TYPES OF IMPELLER FOR GAS-LIQUID RECION

There are two types of mountings: disc and arm-mounted (where the blades
1) Disc mounted Blade and
2) Blades are attached directly to the hubs

Three types of blade shapes:

1)spined (like the 6SRGT where the blade profile ends on a fold)
2) parabolic blades (where the blade section is described by a parabolic curve) and
3) the Smith type (where the blade section is a section of circular pipe).

Selection of Impeller for Gas- Liquid reaction

A) The Selection based on Type of impeller in order of choice is
BEST a) Parabolic Type Hollow Blade turbine (HBT)
b) Hollow Blade Smith Turbine
c) Six Blade Ruschtom Disc turbine
d) 45 Pitch 6 Balde Turbine (PBT)Up pumping recommanded for catalyst suspension during gassing

B) The selection based on torque , Power use

C) The selection based on shear Rate

D) Selection based on Tank Geometry and use

Pitch Blade Turbine (PBT)

Application : Use for High shear Rate ( require for good mixing) and up pumping fluid flow for recirculation
Flow-efficient than radial flow turbines - More fluid shear than hydrofoil impellers
Economical for flow-velocity and fluid-shear applications
CBT Curved Blade Turbine (CBT) also known as Hollow Blade Turbine (HBT)
Application :Primarily used where flow velocity sensitive applications desire radial flow to break up plug flow ( Gas d
Most flow-efficient radial flow impeller available -
where high wall velocity is required.
Most flow-efficient radial flow impeller used to break up plug flow

RT Rushton Turbine (R100 Lightnin, D-6-Chemineer)

Application :Primarily used for very high intensity mixing
Primarily used for very high intensity mixing where low power number impellers would be too large..
It has high power number , the highest of any common impeller..
Impeller of choice for gas dispersion applications Traditional impeller of choice for gas dispersion applications -
Currently being replaced by the High Solidity Hydrofoil and the Smith Turbine -
RUSHTON TURBINE
Recommended for Liquid Liquid high shear mixing and gas dispersion applications:
Classic 90-degree flat blade turbine design (Rushton impeller)
Radial design provides shear to achieve good contacting for liquid-liquid and gas-liquid
dispersions and emulsions

ST Smith Turbine -GAS HANDLING (R130 -LIGHTNIN, CD-6-CHEMINEER, Van't Riet

Application : Efficient impeller for very high gas dispersion applications
Characterized by curved pipe sections mounted to disc resulting in lower power number and increased efficiency
Highest efficiency impeller for very high gas dispersion applications -
Characterized by curved pipe sections mounted to disc resulting in lower power number and increased efficiency

Recommended for high shear mixing and gas dispersion applications:

Half pipe shaped blades improve gas handling over the R100 impeller while reducing torque
requirements by up to 40%
Radial design provides shear to achieve good contacting for liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersions and em
2 to 5 times more gas dispersion than RUSTON TURBINE

HBT PARABOLIC TURBINE -LOW TORQUE GAS HANDLING ( R-135- LIGHTNIN, BT-6-CHEMINEER , SCA
Application : In Gas Liquid mixing SCABA-6SGRT handles three times more gas than Ruston Turbine,
6BT handles six times more gas than Ruston before flooding & Less 40% Power than Smith
Parabolic radial flow impeller recommended for high shear mixing and gas dispersion applications:
Optimized parabolic blade shape improves gas handling ability by 20% and reduces torque requirements b
Radial design provides shear to achieve good contacting for liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersions and em
2 to 5 times more gas dispersion than RUSTON TURBINE
