FIXES is “simply genius” – 3 Years Ago Today

Three years ago today Tokyo Green Space gave me much needed motivation with this lovely introductory
post – Thanks Jared!

A-small-lab, Chris Berthelsen’s creativity research and practice studio, has just launched an amazing blog
called Fixes. Fixes investigates and documents “alterations of space/objects at the public/private boundary in
suburban Tokyo.”

There are many creative examples of people using simple and recycled materials to improve spaces outside
homes and shops in a residential area. A wire coat hanger stores outdoor sandals on a beam, someone creates
a wood stand for plants and bbq seating on top of a driveway boundary, a gardener recycles plastic storage
http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/ 10/29
4/11/2018 FIXES

containers for garden edging, and, above, someone uses a cinder block to even out the entry stairs to a
residence.

Chris has an amazing eye for the creativity of Japanese people making small changes to their environment
and blurring the boundary of private and public space. This blog project is simply genius.

This rambling garden along a strech of 4-lane residential road illustrates the blurred, conjunctive nature of
Tokyo gardening (although this example is from Nagoya).

Pots, blocks, dirt and plants sit, stand on and burrow over and into each1 other in a rich semi-autonomous

Video: Improvised Public Seating

Lack of public seating in Tokyo necessitates improvisation for a morning smoke, drink and relax after the
tiring commute. Perhaps this deficiency in urban furniture is actually a blessing, allowing for more flexible
and frequent seating opportunities. Less predefinition can equal greater malleability.

Coin Parking BMX Training Update

As noted in Deadspace Parking as BMX Training Course these income-generating asphalt plots become
obstacle courses for budding and/or PRO suburban Tokyo BMXers from 12:30am onwards. Tonight as I
return in the Dark Hourz I find the same man in a different coin parking space. I wonder whether he moves
around to avoid detection or whether these spaces offer a valuable diversity of terrain that I have not before
detected….. I need to look at those wheel clamps, judder bars and smooth asphalts more carefully.

Deadspace Parking as BMX Training Course

We often decry Tokyo parking lot deadspace as an unimaginative and underused default money-making use
for vacant lots but this stance exposes our own prejudices against concrete and blinds us to the diverse
possibilities that the rugged terrain may offer.

Here, a half-empty suburban Tokyo pay-parking lot is the scene of a solo BMX training session in the early
hours of Wednesday morning.

It is easier to record the remnants and artifacts of human(e) use of the city than it is to record use-in-action,
but this example encourages me to spend more dark hours wandering the streets.

I wonder how these deadspaces by design are used when prying eyes are asleep: Deadspace by Design ONE
& TWO on Tokyo Green Space.

Robust Homeless Village made of Refrigerators

This village constructed by homeless people took over a large part of Nagoya’s central Shirakawa Koen. As
you can see, the defensive wall around the outside of the village was constructed from an array of broken
down refrigerators and tree stumps. A very robust set-up that was unfortunately no match for the ‘city
beautifiers’ who attempted to destroy what was left of Nagoya’s soul in the run up to the 2005 Aichi Expo.

Poo Security
My wife is the poo expert in our house. She is the self-declared ウンチ・ファインダー(Poo Finder). This
does not mean that she appreciates it in any way shape or form… imagine her horror to find errant and
especially smelly poo in our apartment carpark – a rare and shocking occurence in a city where plastic poo
bags are king, and apartment dwellers wipe their pooches bums after every ablution. toilet stop…. It is also
very inconvenient as it takes up two bicycle parking spaces in our cramped residential grounds.

This rock construction (made specifically out of white stones for good night visibility) is her attempt at poss-
safety (as it was beyond her powers to get close enough to dispose of the offending material).

Look closely at the last photo – I think that these are the offenders. As I was taking these photos they turned
the corner, possibily to give us a second bombing… not sure what they have against us, probably our
screaming children and wayward terrorist-looking man-about-the-house.

Early October is Ginan Season

Early autumn foraging. Making the city your pantry.

It’s hard to miss the ginan (ginkgo nut) season – stinky parks and boulevards, grimy eldery citizens on their
hands and knees across the city. Listening (for once) to my pleading wife I had always refrained from
foraging and limited myself to picking up clean nuts from local vege shops and friendly neighbours. Today,
emboldened by an off-the-cuff lesson by a local retired tantric meditator and astral spectrum rider (also an
expert at losing his pension packet at the races) I picked up a few on the way home from a morning tea at
Showa Kinen Koen.

It’s as simple as the yogi assured me. Pick them up, wash them off at home, fry them up while still in their
shells, nibble with salt and shochu.

I’m pleased to belatedly add the ginan to my foraging schedule, alongside favourites Mulberry and Tokyo
Poppy Seed.

PET Bottle Planters

Going through a dusty 2003 hard drive I find this fantastic example of PET bottle-on-bottle planters at a
gardening exhibition in Nagoya.

The top image features PVA glue planters. The middle image shows how to create flat floral wreath from 2L
PET bottles and sturdy wire. The last image features upright 2L planters, with the fine touch of a bottle-in-
bottle construction to store the watering can for the planter-sculpture. I think the cut-away bottle hanging
from the bottom is a scoop for soil and fertilizer.

Memorial Asagao
Quick notes from memory-infused morning glories

http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/page/2/ 19/30
4/11/2018 FIXES

Mr. Kushimoto in Shibuya gives us an early morning lesson in memory-infused gardening (see Personal
Impact of Urban Green Space) en-route to breakfast at Knee High Media Japan.

His very ordinary plot of asagao (Morning Glory) links him to his Noh teacher who received the seeds as a
gift but had no space to grow them in his tiny apartment and passed them on to Kushimoto. This Noh teacher
lives next-door, in an apartment building that was once part of the Kushimoto family estate (now broken up
into quarters, and soon to be fragmented further – see e.g. Schematic of scattered land ownership over time
in a typical Japanese village).

Mr. Kushimoto used to have a garden that spanned the front of his home, but when his brother turned his
inheritance into an income-producing parking lot dirt became scarce – the compromise being the deep
concrete planter leading up to the entrance to Kushimoto’s property. This planter proved a more productive
spot than the shallow and junky infill soil of the original plot (see last photo).

Now, Mr. Kushimoto lives on the 1st floor of his two-storey house (son and family on 2nd floor) and limits
his gardening to decorative asagao, irises and roses – he informs us he has no need for home-grown
vegetables because he never learned to cook and his wife passed away a couple of years ago (her name is,
however, forever etched on the mailbox plate).

The asagao blooms in the morning, withers by afternoon and goes to seed soon after (a process very lovingly
described by Kushimoto) (see second to last photo). I love the mix of intergenerational property
metamorphosis, spousal memorial, ongoing teacher-student friendship and loyalty, long-term attention
to soil quality and daily change brought out in this simple early morning encounter.

ruler/knife clean) when preparing a quick morning tea.

Public Toilet Resting Strategies

Two ways to use public toilets to catch brief but welcome respite from tired and burning eyes.

(1) Resting chest against the hand rail of the urinal and closing eyes while peeing.
(2) Resting head against wall in front of automatic hand dryer in office building toilets.

In a city of super-instense eye drops and dried-up contact lenses you take the chance when you can.

Swallow Dropping Guards

Swallows build nests to raise their young in the nooks and crannies of structures all over Tokyo. Instead of
destroying the nests in retaliation for copious droppings that result, accommodating caretakers of residential
and commercial buildings lay out mats of cardboard (when close to the ground) or build ‘dropping catchers’
by fixing wooden boards to steel H-beams with vices (for larger commercial structures). I’m impressed with
these gentle constructions and savour the human/non-human relationships that slowly grow as we experience
the process from egg, to chick, to flight.

A Clothesline at the Right Height

All apartments are fitted with built-in washing lines which are below the line of the railing. Unfortunately,
these are too low, meaning that sheets and futons have to be hung carefully to prevent them from resting on
the balcony floor. This resident has erected his own (more common style of) washing line at a more practical
height.

Video: Simple Playground Hacks (Grab the Rock Game)

It’s incredibly easy to hack your neighbourhood playground for competitive sports. Here, a rock and a set of
swings are the required elements for the intensely competitive “Ishi-tori ge-mu” (Grab the Rock Game).

How to Play: Get a rock. Place it somewhere where you think your opponent can’t reach. When he picks it
up, he does the same to you. Ad infinitum. Superb afternoon fun.

Q: What fun and camaraderie might result from creatively combining multiple mundane elements of city
infrastructure?

The video after the photos shows two boys teaching their younger friend how to play. The other videos offer
a brief glimpse of the game in action.

Breeze Block Trees

Judging from the bottles concreted into the ends of the breeze block planters, these trees have been here for
decades.

They seem to have adapted their growth to the cramped residence while becoming large enough to provide a
modicom of privacy and shade. Fresh pruning evidences ongoing care and attention.

I’m impressed that large plants could be grown in such an unforgiving, soil-less environment.

Light on the ground and easily dismantled yet with more presence and permanence than the usual plastic

I love the reuse of traditional housing materials in the grounds of one of the symbols of Japanese
homogenous mass-produced housing. I wonder if the tiles came from a house that originally occupied the
land (and if the owner now resides in one of the apartments).

Quiet gardens nestle up against apartment complex walls and fences, far from the controls of the centre – in

Most Effective Route

With the completion of a new rotary/taxi stand the route straight out of the station, to the convenience store
and up the main street was cut off – necessitating a 2-3 minute detour around the side. For the time scarce
suburban commuter this is not obviously not acceptable.

The state of the shrubbery is evidence of the foot-made solution – two well worn paths between the bushes
leading in a straight line from the bottom of the stairs to the convenience store. Rule-abiding minds have
attempted to discourage this use by placing traffic cones in the way, but to no avail…..

A Basic Incompatibility (Salingaros et al., 2010:60-1)

“Here is a basic incompatibility: organic urban fabric is an extension of human biology, whereas
planned construction is an artificial vision of the world imposed by the human mind on nature. The
former is full of life but can be poor and unsanitary, whereas the latter is often clean and efficient but sterile.”

Salingaros, N., Brain, D., Duany, A.M., Mehaffy, M.W. & Philibert-Petit, E. 2010. Socially organized

The Dominant Species (Salingaros et al., 2010:101)

“The organic urban paradigm has always been only marginally accepted by the powers-that-be, even though
it represents the vast majority of currently built urban fabric. In the ecological analogy, unplanned owner-
built housing is actually the dominant species, whereas in the minds of most people….it is assumed to be
the minority species.”

Economies of Place (Salingaros et al., 2010:94)

http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/page/11/ 15/20
4/11/2018 FIXES

“Banks, governments, and building companies are captivated by economies of scale, and are less sensitive to
economies of place and of differentiation needed to repair a neighborhood. Wielding a blunt and
relatively primitive economic instrument, they would prefer to wipe out the neighborhood and build it all
over again. It is much less trouble, and less costly in crude monetary terms, to do this. But of course, the
unsustainability of this lopsided economic model (and its terrible cost to society) is becoming painfully
evident.”

Adaptive Changes (Salingaros et al., 2010:84)

“We always come back to the competition between permanence and adaptability. Adaptive changes to form
are akin to repair and self-healing in an organism, but are often misinterpreted as a degradation of the
project. In fact, the geometry is trying to heal itself (through human action) after the imposition of unnatural,
alien forms. This is a natural organic evolution, and should not be discouraged simply because it
contradicts an architect’s “pure” vision of how people SHOULD live. We most emphatically condemn as
inhuman the present practice of forbidding any modifications to social housing by their residents. Tied
in to our suggestions for ownership, we uphold the fundamental right for an owner/resident to modify his/her
dwelling to any extent withough impinging on the rights of neighbors or the public space.”

Salingaros, N., Brain, D., Duany, A.M., Mehaffy, M.W. & Philibert-Petit, E. 2010. Socially organized
housing: a new approach to urban structure. In P2P Urbanism. Draft Version 3.0. Downloaded from

A roadside barrier is held together with a LAN cable. I’m still not clear on the purpose of this barrier,

Night Use Prohibited

Laminated A4 signs affixed with tape proclaim night use of the park prohibited, and encourage people to call
the police emergency line if they see anyone suspicious.

The signs are ambiguously official, being layed out in generic Excel style and signed with a simple
‘Akishima City’ or ‘Akishima City Park Authority’ – they look like they could have been made by anyone. I
removed one as a test, and it was replaced promptly. When I placed my own sign (as part of the
kokonohanashi project) it was promptly removed. So it appears the signs are official, or at least part of a
dedicated campaign.

This well tended local neighbourhood park garden is actually a quiet memorial to a deceased spouse.

Chatting with the lady who was working on the garden (planting tulips) I learned that she was carrying on
the work of her husband, who had passed away the year before. He had worked in some area of the city
agriculture/environmental works department and had shared his love and knowledge of plants and gardening
over the years of marriage.

His volunteer work maintaining this patch in a local park had been his gift to the neighbourhood.

Postal Signalling in Tape

“Apartment number 303 is currently vacant, and as a result the building owners have placed green tape over
the letterbox to prevent it from filling up with advertising mail. Whenever an apartment is vacant they
always tape up the letterbox with green tape.

It appears the occupants of apartment 202 have gone on an extended holiday or business trip and will be
leaving the apartment vacant long enough for surplus advertising mail to become a problem. Therefore they,
or the building owners, have placed white tape over the letterbox.

If the occupants taped up the letterbox themselves I think to myself “Creative thinking 202″. If the building
owners did this then I wonder “Is the different color tape significant, or is it just what they had on hand on
the day they taped up the box?, Does green mean vacant and white mean temporarily unoccupied? If so
doesn’t this signal to potential burglars that 202 is where the goodies are?”.

This mystery remains unsolved.” – courtesy of Byron Kidd – Thanks again Byron!

Trained Creeping Fence

Using many metres of plastic twine, a local coffee shop owner has trained a flowering creeper up and down
both sides of the paved lane outside their shop.

Even though seemingly random, the complex web of twine takes a non-trivial amount of time, thought and
effort to construct.

The web has been prepared to guide an independent creeper along the fence line of a vacant lot, creating a
lush green waist high curtain.

I especially like the way the corners have been densely woven (images 8,9,10), enabling thick growth and
thus a cool and shady habitat for insects, cats and other animals.

Street Broom in Nook

Thanks to Jared Braiterman of Tokyo Green Space for this fix:
“I visited the Nezu Museum last week and saw this broom, resting in a cut-out of the outside wall. i love how
this broom is just sitting near where it will be used, and there is NO concern for it being stolen.”

Bicycle Parking Forms Walkway

Bicycles are parked in a way which creates a path of least distance from the exit of the train station to the
nearest convenience store. I imagine that one reason for this courtesy is to try to stave off retribution for
parking in a no parking zone – another may be the subconscious adherence to the paved markings in front of
the shop (a very subtle but effective form of control).

Leaky Roof Fix in Plastic and Tape

Plastic sheeting, tubes and tape used to deal with a leaky roof in Shibuya station.

This work shows great skill and experience – from the placement and ‘give’ of the sheets to the way tape is
used to adjust the angle of the tube and sheet to allow water to flow freely to the bucket placed at the bottom
of the stairs.

I know that this type of construction is common in stations during rainy periods….anyone else have any
photos?

Big Brother in PET Bottles, Duct Tape and Odds & Ends
“It appears big brother is watching this garbage disposal area but closer inspection reveals that the camera is
a cleverly crafted replica made from a plastic bottle wrapped in black duct tape, sporting two drawing pins
and with an old stereo cord added to complete the effect. I chuckle every time I pass partly at the fact that its
not fooling anybody and partly at the fact that someone crafted and installed the device.” – courtesy of Byron

Curbside Chili Garden

http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/page/14/ 7/26
4/11/2018 FIXES

Curbside dead space transformed into edible space. Tomatoes, goya, cucumber, and eggplant are standard
members in Tokyo pavement vegetable gardening but this is the first time I have seen a small bush of hot
chilies on an appropriated sidewalk plot.

As opposed to most other pavement gardening this bush is planted directly into the soil between the footpath
and the road, and space is demarcated by a large-ish flowering bush on the sidewalk side and a white picket
fence on the driveway entrance side.

A high level of public trust is necessary for people to feel they can grow precious and delicious plants in the
open – “A city that’s safe for vegetables and plants is one that also welcomes people” (Ref).

Security or Stabilization?
A medium size potted bamboo plant is secured to a breeze block and signpost with a long length of plastic
twine (one key item in the urban gardener’s arsenal).

What is the function of this construction? Is it a security device – being of just enough nuisance to
discourage late-night strollers from lightheartedly taking it home (It is easy pickings for any determined
thief)?. Is it a stabilizing defense against high-winds? Or, does it simply prevent the pot from falling/being
bumped over in its precarious position?

Eye-Level Potplant Rack

An interesting space-saving variation on the curbside/wall garden.

A thin plank of wood rests on top of a wire fence and is secured in place with wire and string tied to the
guttering and drainpipes. Extra safety is added through a long plastic gardening rod which acts as a railing
along the front of the garden. Precarious yet thoughtful, this construction does not intrude into the narrow

Curbside Embedded Pots

On an innner-Sendagaya street lies this colourful curbside garden. Another lovely example of a local resident
taking the time to brighten up a lonely curbside.

What made this particular garden stand out is the fact that it is composed entirely of plants still in their
garden center pots and plastic containers.

One would imagine that the plants would grow better repotted directly into the ground, but perhaps the
existing soil is of too-poor quality to allow this. An alternative explanation might be that this is the
gardener’s compromise between a ‘potscape‘ and a full-blown regular garden – less intrusive than a whole
lot of pots on the sidewalk, while still retaining the flexible, temporary feel of most Tokyo pot-plant
gardens…..possibly repotting the plants felt like too much of a brash appropriation for the gardener
involved….. (in the last image you can see one plant finally breaking (being set?) free of its contraints – I
wonder how long it will last in the ‘real world’)

Any other ideas?

Trackside Asagao Space

http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/page/16/ 20/33
4/11/2018 FIXES

Along the narrow no-man’s-land between the railway track fencing and the road there is just enough space
for residents of the house that lies directly opposite to create an asagao (morning glory) garden.

Constructed of plastic/metal gardening rods, bamboo and plastic twine this simple 3m x 1.5m (approx.)
construction provides the right amount of support for the plants to climb and bloom. I like that the seed
packet has been left at the base of the plant to let pedestrians know what is growing (or maybe it is a
reminder to the gardener).

This is a great example of the affordable, productive, and enjoyable appropriation of unused/unusable space
that is characteristic of Tokyo DIY gardening.

Hanging Garden in Pots and Wire

This lush road facing garden has a hanging component which demonstrates a number of ways to use wire to
fix pot plants in precise locations.

In the third image, wire is threaded through an opening on the rim of one pot, and twisted around the window
grate to secure it in place. Nearby, wire is twisted directly around the hook of a larger hanging pot to place it
at the desired level. Below, in the fourth image, a more secure hanging construction is formed by wrapping
wire around the pot, under the rim and then attaching a larger hook made of wire arching over the top.

Tokyo-DIY-Gardening.org Project Launch

http://a-small-lab.com/fixes/page/17/ 24/30
4/11/2018 FIXES

I am delighted to announce a new collaboration with Jared Braiterman from Tokyo Green Space – Tokyo-
DIY-gardening (and I have appropriated parts of his announcement post below).

Tokyo-DIY-Gardening celebrates ordinary and extraordinary efforts to bring nature into the world’s largest
city. In a space more known for concrete and commerce, growing plants for ornament and food is fun, social,
and magical.

Tokyo-DIY-Gardening is an open sourcebook and resource for urban gardening on a personal level – “hands-
on gardening for a crowded city”. It includes ‘how-to’ examples/instructions, photo essays, observations,
interviews, articles and more with the aim of knowledge sharing and creation around low-cost, agile
gardening in dense cities (with a focus on Tokyo).

The DIY element invites everyone to experiment, share, and create a garden regardless of how little soil,
space, budget, or experience you have. Gardening is fun for seniors, children, cooks, bird-watchers, and all
of us who spend most of our time in the city.

We invite active collaboration/participation. Send in your photos and stories about cool neighborhood
gardens that you think are special or inspiring. We have a soft spot for recycled materials, volunteer plants,
and urban wildlife [contribute/participate]

You can follow our Twitter hash tag #tokyoDIYgardening.

And, if you are in Tokyo, please come to our interactive workshop at the new 3331 Arts Chiyoda space
where we introduce the project and invite a collaborative mapping and re-imagining of Tokyo as the greenest
city full of gardens, plants, and trees. The workshop will be held in Japanese and English.

We are excited to participate in the Grand Opening series of events at 3331 Arts Chiyoda, and look forward
to opening our project to many voices.

Potplant Shelf on Wall

A stable shelf for potplants created by placing a plank on top of a breeze block residential wall. Notice the

Clever Hook-based Hanging Garden

A clever solution for creating a hanging garden along a breeze block wall without damaging/affecting the
structure in any permanent way.

Wire is threaded through the gaps in the ornamental blocks, and wound around from top to bottom. The ends
are then twisted and bent up to form a robust hook for supporting a planter. The result is a (potential) wall of
green which is easily removed/altered.

Curbside Garden Space in Concrete and Rocks

Garden space is created on the curb in front of a residential wall on a narrow street. The owner of the
property did not want to encroach on the already scarce road space so she constructed a planter from rocks
and concrete right on top of the curb. The limited volume of the created space necessitated hardy succulents
(the owner noted that she had tried to grow other flowers but they didn’t work out). She was so confident of
their hardiness that she picked a few off and offered them to me to take home. Fantastic!
When quizzed about the origins of the design, she confessed that she hadn’t seen the idea anywhere else – it
just ‘popped’ into her head as a suitable solution.
