2. Purpose and Scope

a. BASF GEISMAR identified Tank D-465 as deficient in operation relating to leak paths for
hazardous materials. Welds and base material have been identified as deficient with cracks, pitting
or other deficiencies requiring weld and material restoration
b. BASF GEISMAR API Inspector has clearly identified the areas of concern for this restoration and
supplied access (including safe entry to the tank) and reasonable assistance to Cembell field
personnel during this engagement.
c. Cembell Industries supplied field service (personnel, welding equipment, welding consumables,
NDE application and end updated documents at the end of field repair) to restore the welds and
effected areas.

5. Materials used in Repair

No additional materials are anticipated in the repair. Materials for weld consumables shall be in accordance with
the referenced WPS

Weld Patch Plates, if used, shall be new material of either ASTM A-36 or A-516 70.

Material under ½” THK need not consider brittle fracture per API 653 Figure 5-2.

6. Repair Detail

a. Areas marked by BASF API Inspector to be restored were cleaned of surface irregularities and
contamination by wire brush, grinding, gouging or other suitable methods to ensure a suitable
welding surface was prepared. Weld prep area ensured cleanliness of the area to at least 1” either
side of the anticipated weld area.
b. After weld prep, areas were VT & PT examined to ensure the weld prep area was free of defects.
c. No welding occurred within 3” of the tank shell wall (Critical Zone).
d. A Welded patch plate was employed to cover large areas of pitting or material degradation which
was unfeasible to weld overlay at the top of the sump. This patch plate was no greater than 24” in

width and installed with either a full fillet or full penetration weld. A full penetration weld was
employed for the longitudinal seam with VT & PT examination.

7. NDE

a. Visual Examination
1. Visual examination of all weld prep and finished welds required
b. PT
1. PT was required after all weld preparation and finished welds
c. Hydrostatic Testing
1. Hydrostatic testing for this repair service is not required.

8. Reports and Documentation

a. Documentation requirements for this repair are the responsibility of BASF. This document and the
drawing in Attachment A are supplied to their efforts.
