Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

Established Goals (SOL or Curriculum Standards)

Matter
2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids,
and gases. Key concepts include
a) identification of distinguishing characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases;
b) measurement of the mass and volume of solids and liquids; and
c) changes in phases of matter with the addition or removal of energy.

Enduring Understandings Essential Questions

Students will understand that… ● What distinguishes each phase of
● There are three states of matter with matter?
distinct, different characteristics ● What occurs when matter has energy
● How to measure the mass and or heat added or removed?
volume of solids and liquids ● What is the importance of measuring
● Matter changes phases with the and analyzing mass and volume of
removal or addition of energy substances?
● All substances are made of matter
● Matter is anything that has mass and
takes up space
● Mass is a measure of the amount of
matter.
● Weight is the measure of the
gravitational pull on an object.
● Volume is the measure of the amount
of space occupied by matter.
Students will be able to… Learning Targets in the “I can” format
● I can use tools to measure volume and mass of matter
● I can give the definition of matter
● I can say what phase of matter something is
● I can describe what happens to matter when it gets hotter and colder

Stage 2: Determine Evidence for Assessing Learning

Performance Tasks: Summative Other Evidence: Formative Assessment

Assessment (formal assessment to ensure (informal assessment to assess learning)
students meet SOL standards)
● Wonderboard
● Written Test ● Lab
● Movement assessment
● Drawing
● Quizizz
Materials:
1. Balances
2. Beakers
3. Water
4. Lab Sheet
5. White Board
6. Markers
7. Quizizz
8. Cloze Chart
9. Rocks
10. 500 ml Graduated Cylinders
11. Rulers

Stage 3: Build Learning Plan

Learning Activities: Step by step activities (Include the amount of time) (1 hour and 30
minutes)

● Wonderboard: Ask what the children know about matter and let them write it up on
the Whiteboard at the front of the class with markers (10 minutes)
● Lecture: Give cloze on the definition of matter and different stages (20 minutes)
● Movement/Drawing Activity: Children will act out the different stages of matter as
groups of particles and the reaction of the phases with the addition and the removal
of energy and then draw them on a chart (20 minutes)
● Lab: Students will learn how to measure the mass/weight and volume of solids and
liquids (30 minutes)
● Quizizz: Review content with technology (10 minutes)

Differentiation/Enrichment Activities

During the lab, students who understand the concept better based off of their ability to
perform the concepts understood during the movement activity will be paired with those
who are struggling. During the movement and drawing activities, I will be circulating and
be giving assistance to those children who do not understand. For those who understand
those activities better, they will be challenged to apply it to solids and liquids they see on a
daily basis and draw those solids/liquids as well.

Stage 4: Reflection

What are the three types of matter?- Low-level

Why and how does heat change the phases of matter?-High-level

What is the difference between the phases of matter?-High level

How do the different phases of matter interact with you?-High Level

What do you use to measure volume?-Low-Level

Use these questions during the 20 minute lecture before doing the movement activity
