UNESCO RESOLUTION!
•  May 16th of every year will be celebrated as the
International Day of Light (IDL)*, **!

•  Its aim is to promote science, education, art, and
culture related to the broad themes of light and light-
based technologies; and!

•  Support the general aim of UNESCO in contributing to
the building of peace, the eradication of poverty,
sustainable development and intercultural dialogue
through education!

*Approved by UNESCO Exec. Board, 200th session (Paris, 19 Sept. 2016)!
**May 16, 1960 was the day of the first successful operation of the laser
by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. !

GOALS OF IDL*!
•  Improve the public understanding of how light and light-based technologies touch the daily
lives of everybody, and are central to the future development of the global society.!

•  Build worldwide educational capacity through activities targeted on science for young people,
addressing issues of gender balance, and focusing especially on developing countries and emerging
economies.!

•  Highlight and explain the intimate link between light and art and culture, enhancing the
role of optical technology to preserve cultural heritage.!

•  Enhance international cooperation by acting as a central information resource for activities
coordinated by learned societies, NGOs, government agencies, educational establishments,
industry, and other partners.!

•  Emphasize the importance of basic research in the fundamental science of light, the need for
investment in light-based technology to develop new applications, and the global necessity to
promote careers in science and engineering in these fields.!

•  Promote the importance of lighting technology and the need for access to light and
energy infrastructure in sustainable development, and for improving quality of life in the developing
world.!

•  Raise awareness that technologies and design can play an important role in the achievement
of greater energy efficiency, in particular by limiting energy waste, and in the reduction of light
pollution, which is key to the preservation of dark skies.!

–  Exhibitor with setup/ demo may also put up a poster (size A1: 23” x 33”) !
Suggested poster layout: Title, Name and Affiliation, PANL logo (left) and school/ company logo (right), Abstract
(max. 120 words), Principles (must include diagram), Key Results (Images, graphs), Applications in local context (if
possible), Conclusion, Your photo, contact info !
–  All documentations will be included in a Souvenir Program and press releases!

•  LECTURE/ WORKSHOP!
–  Exhibitor may conduct a lecture (15 or 30 minutes) / workshop (60 or 120 minutes) that includes, whenever
possible, demo or practical activities!

•  SPECIAL AWARDS!
–  Recognition will be given to exemplary exhibits/ workshops based on significance and impact to local communities!
