Summative Writing Task with Rubric

Geometry in the World Project

Instructions: Throughout our unit on the introduction to proofs, we will be focusing on

unknown angle proofs. After reading in your textbook and doing some further research

of your own, choose a theme such as a sport, hobby, or location to illustrate 5 different

geometric definitions and 5 different postulates/theorems. You may take a photo or lo-

cate a photo (look in newspapers, magazines, etc) to represent a definition or postu-

late/theorem from your textbook. This project will be presented. I suggest that you use

Powerpoint or create a poster for your presentation although your presentation mode is

not limited to those two forms! For each photo, state the definition, theorem, or postu-

late this photo illustrates and support with evidence why this photo illustrates the defini-

tion, theorem or postulate. You may work with one other student or by yourself, but

each member of the group must submit a one page writing assignment explaining how

angles are important in real life applications based on their project. Be creative!! This

project will be due at the end of the unit.

• The audience you will be addressing in this project is a naive audience (an audience

who does not know anything about your topic and who needs clear explantations).

You will play the role of the expert and pretend that your peers have no idea what it is

you are talking about. The purpose is to convince your audience that angles are very

important in real life applications.

• Fill in these sentences before completing your project:

Before my presentation, the audience will think this way about my topic:

After my presentation, the audience will think this way about my topic:
• The four point rubric you will be graded upon is attached.

Some suggested terms you may want to use for this project (but are not limited to): Ver-

tical angles, linear pair, supplementary angles, adjacent angles, alternate interior an-

gles, complementary angles, straight angle, corresponding angles, auxiliary line, isosce-

les triangle, equilateral triangle, opposite interior angles/remote interior angles, exterior

angle to a triangle, base angles, congruence

Some suggested postulates/theorems you may want to use (but are not limited to):

Right Angle Congruence Theorem, Congruent Complements Theorem, Congruent Sup-

plements Theorem, Linear Pair Postulate, Vertical Angle Congruence Theorem
