Assessment Tool Overview

Assessment
Assessment Assessment
Assessment Tool Brief Description FOR
AS Learning OF Learning
Learning
Students are to learn 27 literary devices in
order to use them in their poetry. To keep
talking about them throughout the unit and
ensure students keep going over the notes
daily quizzing will occur. Every day I will ask
Literary Devices X
the class 3-5 terms and they can raise their
hands if they know the definition or an
example of it. The goal is to get through all
the terms and have each student answer one
term.
Write a sonnet, as a class. Allow students to
pick a topic and they will give you lines as
they come up with them. Encourage the
students to talk as a class and pass ideas
around to create the best lines for the poem.
Make sure to remind students of the rhyming
scheme as they go. After the poem is
In-Class Sonnet complete ask all the students to read the X X
poem in their head and make sure that it
follows the correct rhyming scheme. This will
ensure that students know the requirements
of sonnet poetry in depth before writing
their own for summative assessment. It will
also show the teacher if concepts need to be
explained further.
Write two limericks, as a class. Allow
students to pick one topic and then write the
other based on ‘summer.’ Have each row of
students come up with a line for the poem
(5) and type it on the board for them all to
see, rows must use what the previous row
In-Class Limerick had said to ensure it follows the correct X X
rhyming scheme. After the poem is complete
ask all the students to read the poem in their
head and make sure that is follows the
correct rhyming scheme and syllable count.
This will ensure that students know the
requirements of limerick poetry in depth

prior to writing their own poems. It will also

show the teacher if concepts need to be
explained further.
Students are to write a haiku poem on their
own. They have to write about something
seasonal or nature. Students are not allowed
to write the words of their poem, instead
they have to find and cut out the words from
Haiku newspapers, flyers or magazines. Students X
must also draw or color something on their
poem that is related. This will prove
students’ knowledge and understanding of
haiku poetry. Students need to ensure they
have the correct line and syllable count.
Students are to write a sonnet poem on their
own. This poem needs to be
autobiographical, describing themselves or
something about themselves. This will prove
Sonnet X
students’ knowledge and understanding of
sonnet poetry. Students need to ensure they
have the correct line count and followed the
right rhyming scheme.
Students are to write a limerick poem on
their own. This poem can be about anything
they want, but they are required to include
Limerick at least two (2) words found on paint chips X
(paint color names.) They have to
incorporate the words and still have the
poem make sense.
Students will be writing a poem, ideally one
of all three types, to perform in front of the
class. This is allowed to be completed in
groups of up to 3 students or alone if they
choose. This is to push past the level of
poetry they have previously completed and
Poetry Slam Poem X
try to write something broader and more
meaningful for the purpose of performing.
Students get to choose their topic and which
type of essay they want to be their final.
They must use all of the required
components of that type of poem.

Students are to perform their chosen poem

in front of the class (unless spoken to the
teacher ahead of time.) This is allowed to be
completed in groups of up to 3 students or
Poetry Slam alone if they choose. Students need to
X
Performance present their poem in an enthusiastic and
appropriate way. Poetry slams are a real way
that poems are shared with an audience so
this is giving the students a view into that
experience.
Following the completion of performing their
poems students are required to complete a
self-assessment of how they felt they were as
Self-Assessment for a group member. Self-assessment is an
X
Poetry Slam Group important tool to use to see how well you
contributed to a group assignment and how
much you learnt or taught others throughout
the process.
