if your grand piano needs to be regulated:

---Check the Action---
-Check the Let-off distance to see that it is consistent note to note (check all notes) about 1/16
inch away from the string in the plain strings and 1/8 inch away in the wound bass strings. If
there is very little Let-off the hammers may jam up against the strings when playing. If there is
too much Let-off it will be difficult to play loud or quietly consistently. Drop and Aftertouch may
interfere with Let-off.
-Check the Drop distance to see that it is consistent note to note (check all notes) about 1/16 inch
away from Let-off. If there is no Drop, then Drop may be too high and will interfere with
observing Let-off. If there is too much drop it will be difficult for notes to be repeated quickly.
Aftertouch may interfere with Drop.
-Check the Hammer Blow (check all notes) distance to see that the hammers form an even line
at rest.
-If the three aspects from above are consistent then check for consistent Aftertouch (check every
note). If there is too much Aftertouch the hammers may jam against the strings. If there is no
Aftertouch the hammers may not Drop at all or may not even get to the point of Let-off.
-Check the Backcheck distance to see that each backcheck catches its hammer consistently note
to note (check every note). Also, check to see that the hammers rise up to Drop position after
backchecking when the keys are slightly released.
A disclaimer on consistency: One of the other aspects to consistent playing is inertia which is
difficult to observe. If the keys have varying weights, varying balances, or varying friction they
will have different inertia making it difficult to play consistent note to note.
---Check the Pedals---
-Check that the Damper Pedal starts to lift the dampers when the front tip of the pedal is pressed
about 1/8 inch. Much further than 1/8 inch means wasted foot motion.
-Check that the Soft Pedal shifts the piano action to the right so that the grooves in the hammers
align with the next string to the right or get 2/3 of the way to the next string on the right.
-Check the Sostenuto Pedal by pressing and holding the Damper Pedal completely down, pressing
and holding the Sostenuto Pedal down, and lifting the Damper Pedal. All of the dampers should
remain up. Secondly, press down the Sostenuto Pedal and play each note. All of the dampers
should return to the strings when you let go of each key.
If anything does not pass the checks above ask your technician about regulating your piano.
A well-regulated piano action offers:
Faster repetition
Quieter quiet playing
Louder loud playing
Consistency from note to note
