What Will Happen in the Audition?

During the group audition you will learn a passage of music on your voice part in a group setting. You will then be asked to sing in small groups to
demonstrate your choral skills (ability to blend, match tone color, maintain correct pitch, and learn a passage of music in a short amount of time). You may
be asked to prepare part of the music in advance at home on your own. If this is the case, you will receive that information at the end of your individual
audition.

The individual audition will last about 7 minutes. During that time, you will do the following:
1. Perform a Short Memorized Song
Concert Choir- Select one song from the following list. Prepare to sing the melody for the first verse only from
memory. This can be sung in any key. Most of these songs can be found in standard hymnals or
online. You do not need to bring music.
• My Country ‘Tis of Thee, by Smith
• Silent Night, by Gruber
• Be Still My Soul, by Sibelius
• It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, by Willis
I Suoni Dolci & Madrigals- Prepare and memorize a verse and chorus (usually ~32 measures) of a solo that displays
what you feel highlights your voice, musicianship, and the best part of your range. A
festival appropriate song with accompaniment is encouraged
2. Sing Scales
You will sing the following ascending and descending scales. Using solfege syllables (do, re, mi…) and hand signs are
recommended, but not necessary. All scales can be found in this packet and on the choir website.

Concert Choir- Major I Suoni Dolci & Madrigals- Major

Any Minor (your choice) Natural Minor
Harmonic Minor
Melodic Minor
Chromatic
Whole Tone
3. Aural Memory Check
You will sing back a short series of pitches that you hear on the piano.
4. Music Reading
You will be asked to sight read a simple melody after looking over the music for one minute. Again, the use of solfege
syllables with hand signs is recommended, but not necessary.
5. Vocal Range Check
Mr. Emrazian will determine how high and low you can sing.

For Incoming Freshman & Sophomores New to Choir at Brighton:

• A Theory Placement Exam is required for you. The auditioned choirs at Brighton are intended for intermediate musicians and above. This
test will help determine if you are ready to take an advanced choir, or if Mixed Chorus would be a better option to help foster your
musicianship for auditioned choirs in the future. A combination of your theory test score, your audition, and availability in the choirs will
help determine the final groups.
• The test usually takes 30 minutes or more to complete, and can be taken at any time during the audition times. Please ask Mr. Emrazian or
a choir officer for the test when you are ready to take it.

For Returning Choir Member

1. IMPORTANT NEW - Returning members wishing to stay in the same choir must come to the group audition and return this packet
signed and completed. Depending on how auditions go, an individual audition may be asked from you to secure your current position in
the group. That decision has yet to be made this year, but we will probably be moving away from “safe position” in the future. If your
individual audition is needed this year, we will find a time to do them before the end of the school year.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Emrazian at daniel.emrazian@canyonsdistrict.org

this, students are expected to do everything they can to participate. PLEASE plan on going.
Several fundraising opportunities are provided throughout the year to help all students afford tour.
