Science
Mae Fah Luang University

The mission of the School of Science durng its intermediate phase (from its fifth to eighth years) is
to become a consumer-oriented unit which promotes excellence in research in key areas of science,
demonstrates evidence of high-quality teaching and learning in an environment informed by
internationally-important research, and makes significant contributions to the economic, social,
and cultural development of the North of Thailand, Thailand as a whole, the Greater Mekong
Sub-region, and elsewhere.
Current Teaching Programs:
At present, the School of Science offers two bachelor’s degree programs, as follows:

Bachelor of Science in Biosciences

Undergraduate Bulletin
The Bachelor of Science program in Biosciences is a multi-disciplinary program that recognizes
the importance of the great diversity of biological resources in the country, particularly in the Northern
region and thus emphasizes the utilization of the resources for the benefits of the country, in general
and local people, in particular. The program aims to educate the student to have both knowledge
and experience in three major areas of expertise, including Biotechnology, Agricultural Science,
and Applied Microbiology and enable them to apply their expertise in the innovative development of
bio-industries that are friendly to the environment.
Content:
The Bachelor of Science program in Biosciences offers the following three different major fields of
study.
1. Biotechnology – Study of the application of biological principles and techniques for the
production of useful substances and services from living organisms for the benefit of humans.
2. Agricultural Science - Study of the application of agricultural science for the production
of agricultural products with the emphasis on products from plants.
3. Applied Microbiology - Study of the application of microbiological techniques for the
industrial production of useful products from microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.
Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry
The Bachelor of Science program in Applied Chemistry applies the principles of chemistry for
research and development of natural products and polymers that are crucial for various industries
in Thailand, e.g., medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. The program aims to educate
students to have both the knowledge and experience in two major areas of expertise including
Natural Products Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry to enable them to apply their expertise in the
innovative development of natural products and polymers that will play an important role in the
economic and social development of the country.
Content:
The Bachelor of Science program in Applied Chemistry offers the following two different major
fields of study.
1. Natural Products Chemistry - Study of the application of chemical principles and
techniques for the production of useful natural products from living organisms, particularly from
plants, for the benefit of humans.
2. Polymer Chemistry - Study of the application of chemical principles and techniques for
the synthesis of polymers from natural sources such as plants and microorganisms, and the
application of polymers in the manufacturing of various products such as medical materials, sports
materails, as well as for modern technologies such as space technology and nanotechnology.
