Spirituality: Law and Grace

An unfinished sermon study focusing on the difference between OT and NT

righteousness.

Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I
have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

No one can keep the whole OT laws of their own accord. It has to be a supernatural act of God through
the process of being Born again.

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Galations 3:24 Wherefore the
law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by
faith.

One of the early prophecies concerning the law…

Jeremiah 31:33 "This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after
that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on
their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

The process by which the law becomes written on one’s heart…

John 3:3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God
unless they are born again.”

What Christ did…

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to
us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers,
he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Christ challenged by Pharisees regarding Law...

Matthew 22: 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and
saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy mind. 8 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

“It’s all about love. If I love my neighbor like I love myself, I will not sin against him. If I love my
female neighbor and want to be intimate with her, I would pursue her as a wife and not a concubine.”
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set
down at the right hand of the throne of God.

“It pleased Him to shed His blood for us so that we’re declared the righteous of
God.”

1 Corinthians 11:25 “This cup is the “new covenant in My blood.”

Jeremiah 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those
days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be
their God, and they shall be my people.

Romans 11:27
“And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins."

Christ didn’t pick and choose which parts of the Law to keep… He fulfilled the whole law. As we
mature and grow in Him we lose the desire to sin.

Colossians 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this
mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Luke 1:71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
