Duration: 1 hour Internal Assessment –Test 1 Maximum

B.Tech. Electronics and Communication marks:20
9:00 to 10:00 am Engineering Semester 6 Date: 02 Feb 2018
Course: EC302 DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

Part A (Answer all questions)

1(a) Compare the following techniques used in pulse coding of analog [CO1] [4]
signals: PCM, DM, DPCM and ADPCM.
(b) A speech signal m(t) takes values in the range 2 V – 14.8 V. It is [CO1] [2 X 3 = 6]
transmitted by PCM using 7 bits per sample and a uniform quantizer.
The power of the signal is 30 W. Compute the quantization noise power
and the Signal to Quantization Noise Ratio (SQNR).

2(a) Give a basic block diagram of a baseband digital communication [CO2] [2]
system, and label the blocks that can cause Inter Symbol Interference
(ISI).
(b) State the Nyquist criterion for ISI-free digital transmission. [CO2] [2]
(c) A voice signal can be safely band-limited to 4 kHz. If the signal has to [CO2] [2 X 3 = 6]
be transmitted digitally by PCM using a 256 level quantizer, calculate
the minimum bandwidth required for ISI-free communication. If a
coaxial cable has an available bandwidth of 500 MHz, how many
digitized voice signals can this cable carry at the same time?
Part B (Additional question)

3 In a PCM system, the signal sin(100πt) V is sampled at the Nyquist rate. [2]
The samples are processed by a uniform quantizer with step size 0.75 V.
Compute the minimum date rate of the PCM system in bits per second.

COURSE OUTCOMES: upon completion of course students will be able to

CO1: The student will be able to compare the techniques used to transmit the analog information in a
digital format.
CO2: The student will be able to apply the knowledge of ISI problems in digital communication.
