‘WE’VE GOT good news for you…’ read an email from Cosmopolitan. I’d just reached the top of Machu Picchu (after a four-day hike) and finally got a bar of reception. I hadn’t showered in days, my feet were covered in blisters and my body felt like it had been hit by a bus. But it was one of the greatest moments of my life to date. That ‘good news’ was being offered the position of features director for the magazine. I squealed and then cried hysterically. FACE OF JUNE:

ASHLEIGH CUMMINGS

The Aussie, 24, may have swapped Puberty Blues for Hollywood, but she still gets starstruck by Bindi Irwin

You’re in NZ film Pork Pie (out May 4). Could you get away with the typical accent pisstake? I was in their territory and outnumbered, so I think my Australian accent was pounced upon much more! I was wary of [doing the accent] – it was easy for me to create a caricature of the accent, but much harder to make it a realistic sound.

You won the 2016 Heath Ledger Scholarship on your fifth attempt – is perseverance key? Perseverance, in conjunction

with the consistent development of self and craft, is key here. Unfortunately, progression isn’t always built upon the traditional ladder system, so having faith in yourself and the journey, whilst working hard, is vital.

Are you noticing the tide turning for female roles? I’ve been very fortunate and empowered in my experiences, but I still think society has a responsibility to continue to lift its game: audiences need

to demand the involvement of

more females, authorities need

to invest in female employment

and female creatives need to

keep creating.

When was the last time you got starstruck? Meeting Bindi Irwin. I still lose myself thinking about it.

Your last ‘f*ck, women are awesome’ moment was…

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PERIOD SOLIDARITY

In Vanuatu with CARE, Kelsey Garlick talks about periods, education and why women supporting other women needs to extend beyond our borders

supporting other women needs to extend beyond our borders OK, I ADMIT IT, I’m bizarrely passionate

OK, I ADMIT IT, I’m bizarrely passionate about periods. I talk about mine incessantly; I angrily complain about tampons being taxed; I even wear tampon earrings at that time of the month. I started donating pads to local shelters when I realised that

homeless Australian women couldn’t access them. But for all that, I admit

I never thought far beyond my own

coastline. Which is why I was shocked when I read that just a few hours away, girls in Vanuatu routinely miss school during their periods – not because they don’t want an education, but because of a lack of basic hygiene and understanding about their bodies. These girls – these future women

– miss out on months of education

every single year. Worldwide, there are currently 31 million girls out of primary school and 34 adolescent women out of high school, according to UNESCO’s 2012 Education for All Global Monitoring Report. If you don’t think that matters, just think of all you learn at school, just by being there. You learn how to voice your opinions, how to negotiate,

how to maintain healthy relationships

THANKS TO VIRGIN AUSTRALIA

and friendships; you learn about your place in the world. UNESCO states that ‘ensuring that girls stay in school is one of the most effective ways of averting child marriage and early births.’ And these girls are missing out on all that because they have a reproductive system? I’m not the only one upset by this. NGO CARE International in Vanuatu began distributing sanitary items to ni-Vanuatu women in the aftermath of 2015’s Cyclone Pam, and realised it wasn’t just a post- cyclone problem – it was a monthly problem. Cyclone Pam passed, but Aunt Flo wasn’t going anywhere. With my own monthly visitor in tow, I visited with CARE to learn what Australian women can do to help our sisters-in-uteri. Remember the first time you got your period? Imagine you had never heard anything about it – you just suddenly starting bleeding. That’s how most girls in the rural areas of Vanuatu experience their first period

– or sikmun, translation ‘sick moon’.

Florence, 18, admits that her initial reaction was fear, and tells me that

for many years she was too ashamed to go to school during her sikmun, due to cultural taboos surrounding it. But even if she had, she’d have been using ripped-up cloth or leaves in lieu of pads, and would have had no private toilet to change them. CARE in Vanuatu’s Menstrual Hygiene Management project (MHM)

– part of their Water, Sanitation and

Hygiene (WASH) program – tackles these issues head-on. They build girls’

toilets with wash areas, run awareness sessions to educate girls about their bodies, and have teamed up with local organisation Mamma’s Laef to provide reusable pads and other sanitary items to girls in school – all with the aim of keeping them there. Now, Florence goes to school during her period. CARE in Vanuatu’s program director Charlie Damon says the WASH and MHM projects are about ‘allowing girls in Vanuatu to go to

school with dignity’, and ‘securing their future as financially independent women’ in the long run. The six women who make up Mamma’s Laef hand-sew 150 fabric pads every week, and also help run the awareness sessions. ‘We have to teach our girls so they know this is part of life for women,’ says local mamma Marysa. ‘We want all the girls to know, they can be president. They can be what they want to be,’ adds co-worker Mary. If we want women to be truly equal in the eyes of the world, we need to start with the foundations of society:

education. And we need to remove any obstacles in the way. In some parts of the world, periods are still an obstacle. Let’s make sure it doesn’t stay that way. Because women lift up other women… and women begin as girls. To donate to CARE Australia’s crowdfunding campaign, go to Care.org.au/pads.

get why people think serving drinks is so challenging. Once the restaurant opened, I put six beers on a tray, and I strutted over to serve this table where

my brother’s boss was sitting.

I took one beer off the tray, and

the rest all fell onto his crotch!

I immediately ran into the

bathroom and hid.’ – ASHLEY, 27 ‘It was bad. Her brother had

started a new job, and his boss was a high-powered attorney

– not a great guy for us to be

spilling beers on during our opening night.’

‘I’d been on an online-dating spree, where I was going out with a new person as often as

I could, and this dude cancelled

on me three times in one week. He texted me a fourth time, cancelling again, and I lost it.

I went off at him, cursing him out, telling him what a terrible person he is. Turns out, the text was actually from some other guy, who was only cancelling for the first time.’ – KELSEA, 25

PAUL SUESSE/BAUER. ISTOCK the buzz MARKY PONDERS TO LIVE BY Emma Markezic contemplates ALL THE WORDS

Emma Markezic contemplates ALL THE WORDS to discover the three most important ones you can say to a person…

Anyone who’s anyone has recently tried to engage in a little hygge. Because just like shoes and anyone has recently tried to engage in a little hygge. Because just like shoes and movie stars, certain words can come in and out of fashion – and right now hygge is one of those words. It’s the ‘naked shoe’ of words. So what is hygge? It’s a Danish word that means, ‘creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good

people’. That’s right, we need 14 English words to explain one Scandinavian one. But why stop at plundering one word? We’re not quitters. Let’s take them all! Here are my top five contenders for the word that should trend next:

What: Shemomedjamo

roughly translates to, ‘I accidentally ate the whole thing.’ Where is it from: Georgia

Why we need it: Because we have $5 Domino’s pizzas now and that’s dangerous.

What: Koi No Yokanthe

sense upon first meeting someone that the two of you are going to eventually fall in love. Where is it from: Japan Why we need it: Because it’s ADORABLE.

What: Kummerspeck

excess weight gained from emotional overeating. This literally means ‘grief bacon’. Where is it from: Germany Why we need it: Because I’ve got some grief bacon in my pants and everyone’s invited.

What: Cavoli Riscaldati

when you’ve attempted to revive an unworkable relationship. Basically translates to ‘reheated cabbage’. Where is it from: Italy Why we need it: Because no one should be dating reheated cabbage.

What: Utepilsto sit outside and enjoy a beer on a sunny day. Where is it from: Norway Why we need it: Because ’Straya, duh.

So it’s settled… utepils is the new hygge. I knew it would be. But it’s not all bad – we have some pretty choice words in English as well. Pretty ones like ‘diaphanous’ and funny ones like ‘bumbershoot’ * . But the most important ones – the most life-changing, heart- filling, soul-affirming ones – are some of the smallest ones we have. But we don’t say them enough. Not nearly enough! These three little words are the most significant thing you can say to your mother, brother, lover or… OK, nothing else rhymes with mother. But they are even more important than paying your taxes or voting in an election. Although not doing those could land you in jail, so do them too. And I know what you’re thinking, but ‘I love you’ is

not where it’s at. This is bigger and more meaningful than that. Because in English we say ‘I love cheeseburgers’ with the same vigour we say, ‘I love my mum’. We throw love around like it’s the goon bladder from

a $6 wine box from Aldi. No,

those three magic words are simply… I trust you.

Because by saying I trust

you, we’re saying so much more

– we’re saying ‘I respect you

and acknowledge you and have confidence in you as a person.’ That’s right – 14 words that can be summed up in one neat little confab. I guess maybe English isn’t so bad after all. You just have to trust that it will come good in the end. ( * Umbrella. Bumbershoot means umbrella.) #

’I was very aware of fashion from a young age’

‘What? Really?’ I persist. ‘For now it’s at home. It’s very organised.’ There’s a pause. ‘I have my own system…’ She is as frustratingly coy about the system as she is about how many items of clothes she gets given or even what colour luggage she carries. (She will,

however, enthusiastically disclose that it’s Rimowa and that’s mainly because you can stack the cases, which is handy as she usually carries her own luggage.) There

is colour-coding, I ascertain. And

grouping of separates. ‘Mine is probably different

than other people’s – I don’t have

a seasonal wardrobe because I’m

in different climates all year. But colour-coordinating helps,’ she says. ‘That’s a good way to start, and keep jackets together and pants together. And to consolidate space, use those velvet hangers. They’re cheap [and] they’re thin.’ She’s equally non-committal when I ask her how much stuff she gets sent when she travels to Paris for the shows, as well as the number of times she’ll change outfits to accommodate all the hungry fashion bloggers who live for a shot of her mid-stride between collections. ‘Honestly, my schedule is so tight. I have a show on the hour every hour, and appointments. So my priority is the designers and the collections. Of course it’s nice to change once in a while, and support the designers, if you can, by changing, but there’s not always enough time in the day.’

When I meet her publicist of 10 years, Barbara, the next day, as well as Jillian, the editorial director of her website, Olivia palermo.com, however, they are more forthcoming. ‘She zip-locks everything when she’s travelling,’ says Barbara, miming a zip-lock bag. ‘Foundations in one zip-lock, makeup brushes in another…’ ‘And then she pops the zip- locks inside these monogrammed pouches that she has,’ chimes in Jillian. ‘We’ve all been inspired to do the same.’ As though to prove the point, Barbara gets out her phone and shows me a pap shot of Palermo in an elegant white jumper and skirt. ‘See that?’ she says. Barbara swipes left and a second later, a bedroom selfie of Barbara appears in the same outfit. ‘My style has changed a lot, too, since I started working for her,’ adds Jillian. ‘There’s so much I have learnt from her about style. There’s a nuance to everything she does. For example, I’ve learnt the importance of tailoring. When people see her in high street they wonder why it doesn’t look the same when they wear it. But it’s because she gets most things tailored – even high street.’ It may not surprise you to learn that the sort of woman who gets her Zara trousers tailored comes from a family with an eye for detail. Palermo’s mother, Lynn, is an interior decorator, and her aunt worked in the couture department for Doyle auction house for 25 years. ‘I grew up going to antique roadshows and trade shows and auction houses so I was very aware of fashion from a young age,’ she tells me. At school, however, it was sports that Palermo gravitated towards. And indeed at one point

she had high hopes of becoming a sports commentator after college.

‘I was very studious at school. I

was very into sports.’ There’s a pause. ‘You know, everything was

a bit harder for me because I grew

up with a learning disability.’ It’s the first time she has ever spoken about this. When gently pressed for more information she retreats at lightning speed. ‘I don’t want to go into details but… what was wonderful is that people can be very creative in different ways. And we [she refers

to her childhood friend Jonathan Simkhai, a designer, to whom she

was close at school] really strived to be creative and that evolved as we got older…’ Straight out of college, though, she was cast in The City, a frothy precursor to the scripted reality shows that have since followed. The show created a glacial princess villain out of Palermo, who worked in the PR department of Diane Von Furstenberg. I ask her if that moniker has been hard to shake off. She goes quiet. >

‘It was a wonderful learning experience. And going through

all of that gave me a very clear direction of what I wanted to focus on.’ She pauses. ‘I don’t have any- thing negative to say about it.’ She’s equally sanguine about the title of ‘It-girl’, which has followed her since she became a public figure. ‘I’m not opposed to it. I have nothing to say other than we all evolve. I wear many hats these days!’ One thing she will say about her time on The City is that it afforded her a front-row seat at one of the most famous fashion businesses in the world: Diane Von Furstenberg. It was here, she says, she came to understand how

a fashion empire is run. ‘I would spend time under- standing the business and how

a fashion house is run every day.

It was a really good education.’ This is Palermo all over – a studious collector of experiences. She says she regrets nothing and, strangely enough, I believe her,

because she is, in many ways, the ultimate curator. She has an innate ability to choose and find the very best from a sea of dross. Every job (and she has done them all, from magazine junior to model), and every experience, she has used in some way to create her own brand. As our time draws to a close,

I ask her to take a quick look at my Instagram. I’ve been told it’s not very good, I say. She studies

it with frowning concentration,

and suggests I could think about some borders and maybe a couple of fashion shots. That evening, I post a picture of a pair of earrings, with borders. Like I said, she is the woman who can sell us anything. # Olivia Palermo was shot at the Presidential Suite of The Pierre Hotel, New York.

Work a smoky eye harder with edgy brows, ‘naked’ skin and lusher lashes.

STEP 1: Call this the don’t-care hair of eyebrows – textured, ‘undone’, badass. A DIY brow tint (match the tone to the roots of your hair) is essential for instant, ultra-natural dimension. STEP 2: Pencils down, these brows are all about brow powder. Fill in shape before brushing the inner half of your eyebrow upward and sweeping the outer half to the side. STEP 3: Press charcoal base shadow across pre-primed lids, then blur into smoky haze. Inject deeper definition into your creases. Finger- smudge kohl liner along upper and lower lash lines, pulling the effect into focus. STEP 4: Kick lashes upward (a heated curler maxes curves minus the kink), double-coat them in mascara, then, to really crank the volume, plug individual fakes along your lash line. Let skin go ‘naked’ in moisture-loaded BB cream and finish with creamy neutral pink lips and your hard-glam look’s on lock.

WHILE YOU WERE Think you can get away with under six hours sleep a night and

Think you can get away with under six hours sleep a night and still look radiant? Think again. Getting your beauty sleep is an actual thing

S leep, and whether we

are getting enough, has

become a modern day

obsession. But instead

of tucking ourselves into bed early to get the seven to eight hours the experts recommend, we’re slicing into our slumber in order to squeeze in other, more ‘important’, things. With stress at an all-time high, workloads getting even heavier and total smartphone dependence the norm, sleep seems the most obvious part of our day to scrimp on. The problem is, if we regularly cut

into our shut-eye, eventually we will pay for it in the form of health issues such as illness, depression, anxiety, weight gain, infertility – or just not being able to keep our eyes open when 3pm rolls around. ‘Sleep is vitally important to our physical health,’ says Dr Carmel Harrington, sleep expert at Sleep for Health. ‘Without it we are susceptible to infections and more likely to develop certain cancers as well as heart disease and type

2 diabetes. Obesity is also linked to lack of shut-eye.’ Our skin is affected, too. ‘You need sleep to rejuvenate your organs such as your liver and heart,’ says functional wellness practitioner Darren Cox. ‘If these aren’t at their best, neither is your skin.’ It might seem as though our complexion is doing a lot of nothing while you sleep, but the wee hours is actually when skin goes into damage control after the 16-hour (or more)

onslaught of UV, pollution, smoke, smog and stress that’s thrown at it during the day. As well as being the body’s opportunity to rest, repair and restore, night-time – and your bedroom – is also a safe and clean environment where ‘our skin is not prone to any disruption or attack by UV, pollution or repeated touch’, says Ultraceuticals founder and formulator Dr Geoffrey Heber. ‘Products applied at night can act uninterrupted.’

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK ONKEN

In order to rebuild itself, during the night-time, the body suppresses its release of cortisol (which protects skin from free radicals throughout the day) and boosts its release of human growth hormone (or HGH) to create the perfect environment for collagen making and tissue repair. But if you regularly skip your Zs – or toss and turn all night – cortisol will kick in, causing those tissue-repairing growth hormones to call it a night. Literally. ‘Not getting enough sleep cuts that crucial repair time short,’ warns Dr Harrington. ‘Sleeplessness increases nighttime cortisol levels, which increases the

production of [pimple- and acne-causing] sebum.’ The result, come morning, is skin that’s not only tired, but also inflamed, prone to premature ageing, and spots. If you don’t feel as though you’re getting enough pillow time, you’re not alone. ‘Studies indicate one in three people will suffer a sleep problem at some time in their lives,’ says Dr Harrington. ‘People either can’t get to sleep or they have trouble staying asleep,’ adds Cox. ‘There are obvious stressors like work and relationships, which keep us from falling

asleep, while hidden stressors, such as hormonal issues, liver function, infections, blood sugar and the environment of the room, wake people up during the night.’ Designed to work with your body’s natural rhythms and get the most out of your beauty sleep, more potent night-shift formulations get to work during the small hours when blood flow and cell turn- over are at their peak. All you have to do is sleep. >

Night is the perfect time to enlist formulations with ingredients that don’t love the light, like:

A derivative of vitamin A, retinol works on all skin types and is one of the only ingredients proven to reverse the signs of ageing. Use it two or three nights a week when you start out to let your skin adjust a bit more slowly. Try Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum, $125.

Both AHAs (think glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid), and BHAs (hello salicylic acid) are the perfect actives to apply at night. AHAs ‘unglue’ dead skin cells, while BHAs ‘de-gunk’ pores to leave skin smoother and clearer by morning. Try Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, $132.

Able to boost the skin’s natural cell renewal cycle, enzymes are good for eating up dead skin cells during the night, i.e. peak cell turn- over time. Try Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Night Cream, $210.

WHAT’S ALL THIS ZEN?

The idea of finding spiritual salvation by doing 30 push-ups may sound like some- thing out of Zoolander 2, but it turns out this is a legitimate thing. Mindful fitness works by combining good old-fashioned grunting exercise with mind-mellowing meditation. Chi running (tai chi meets jogging) is set to be the new trend – and we’re on board. Good for mind, body and looking hot in a pair of Lululemons. #

STOP THAT!

You text your friend: ‘Leaving now!’ But really, you’re still in bed. Yep, you’re the person who’s always running behind. Rehab your rep with these tips

ISTOCK

poll, 22 per cent of millennials admitted to being late to work at least once a week. One of their top reasons was ‘I don’t get penalised.’ That’s not entirely true. Lateness can breed resentment in all your relationships and ever-simmering anxiety in you. ‘One of the most predominant issues people have with time is that they constantly lie about it,’ says Lauren Handel Zander, author of Maybe It’s You and chairwoman of the Handel Group, an executive- and life-coaching company. We spend too much energy coming up with fibs to justify our lateness. Time to get real about how your traits, moods

and attitudes might be setting you back.

The Wild Procrastinatortraits, moods and attitudes might be setting you back. body ‘I’M BETTER UNDER PRESSURE!’ We’re all

‘I’M BETTER UNDER PRESSURE!’

We’re all guilty of a little procrastination, but not every single person is a diehard procrastinator. Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology at DePaul University and author of Still Procrastinating?, notes that when you’re postponing, waiting or just delaying, you’re often still gathering information in order to best achieve your goal (read: still being somewhat productive). Procrastination, on the other hand, is actively avoiding making any decision, putting you at an absolute standstill until the very last minute,

often causing you to be late. Yes, you get everything done eventually, but in the mean- time, your stress levels, and chance for error, skyrocket.

THE FIX Take small steps to move forward. That huge adrenaline rush you get from being in a time crunch? It’s not actually giving you super- productive powers. In one of Ferrari’s studies, people who procrastinated performed worse under the pressure than people who didn’t. In the case of life skills, such as cooking, break the goal down into smaller steps. Buy your

food one day, do prep on another, and cook on day three. You can also build in rewards for yourself and set certain restrictions. Maxime Taquet, a Harvard Medical School researcher, says, ‘If you’re working on something that doesn’t really make you happy, doing something else that you enjoy may actually be the right way to get your mood back up so you can continue with that project.’ Stuck halfway through a work project? Indulge in a walk outside or make a cup of tea. Clear your mind for a few minutes.

The

Commitment-Phobe

‘I JUST CAN’T BE TIED DOWN BY SET PLANS’

Zander says these free spirits – or flakes – fear being locked into a reasonable schedule just in case something better comes along. ‘They feel stifled by concrete plans and wait until they’re “in the mood for it” to do something – which leaves a great many things undone,’ she says. Meaning they’re rarely anywhere on time. ‘If you’re waiting for the day you enjoy commitment in order to start, it’s not coming.’ Best learn to deal.

THE FIX Communicate and stick to a plan. Being the flake may feel empowering, like the world revolves around you, but it can wreak havoc when you’re the one who’s flaked on, says productivity expert Julie Morgenstern, author of Time Management From the Inside Out. So just imagine what it’s like to be the other people who are in the scenario at hand (friends or family members), who are simply trying to nail down a

plan. Rather than stringing others along, be up-front and vocal about your intentions. If you are feeling even the least bit lukewarm about making a commitment, say something like, ‘Hey, I like the sound of dinner, but I may need to bail, so please make the reservation without me and I’ll let you know if I can make it.’ This way you’re not giving anyone any false expectations and if you can make it, it’s a bonus. >

The

Underestimator

‘THIS SHOULD ONLY TAKE A MINUTE…

Underestimators are well- intentioned but occupy an alternate reality where time has no meaning. ‘I ask clients like this how long they think a task will take, and then I give them a certain amount of time to complete it,’ Zander says. ‘When the time to stop comes, they are so, so wrong.’ Underestimators are afraid to find out that they can’t do everything, or they obsess over and take too long to do other things, Morgenstern adds: ‘When a person looks at what is in front of her in

advance, she is in a position to make better choices.’ THE FIX Get grounded in reality. Morgenstern breaks clients of this habit by making them time themselves. Choose a situation or task that you’re regularly late on and study yourself doing it on three separate occasions. Calculate your average time. If you’re horrified by the black hole of your schedule, go through all of your upcoming tasks and apply one of Morgenstern’s Four Ds to each one. Delete:

If it’s unimportant, don’t do it. Delay: Reschedule the task for a better time. Diminish:

Break a bigger project into parts and dedicate just one hour a day to it. Or Delegate:

Give all or part of your task to somebody else.

4
4

The Time Martyr

‘I’M SO BUSY – THERE JUST AREN’T ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY!’

Time Martyrs jump at the chance to do everything for everyone, often neglecting their needs in the process. They volunteer to host their cousin’s bridal shower and create the spreadsheet of emergency contacts at work, but at the expense of making it to the Spin class they’ve wanted to try or digging into their passion project. While they feel validated and useful to others, they’re often over-

whelmed, feel unfulfilled and are usually tardy to the party – a hefty trade-off that can lead to eventual burnout.

THE FIX Start saying no. It’s true that saying yes to every- thing can help to accelerate your career – and socially, you’ll never miss a chance to help a friend. But double- and triple-booking yourself means the time you spend in any single place suffers, and

you have no time to take care of yourself. When you are given a task that goes above and beyond, Morgenstern advises buying yourself a little time before immediately answering ‘Sure thing!’ Say:

‘I’d love to do it, but here is everything I’m working on now. Can you help me choose between these?’ Morgenstern says most employers respect this response, especially when it means the work gets done well. The same goes for your friends, who’d rather spend time with the most present version of you. #

3 WAYS TO

CHILL, STAT

Next time you find yourself in the midst of mental turmoil, practise one of these specific breathing exercises from Dr Andrew Weil, founder and program director of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine in the US.

WHEN YOU’RE ANGRY…

TRY BREATH COUNTING

Close eyes and take a few deep, natural breaths, counting from one as you exhale each time, up to five. Continue for up to 10 minutes.

WHEN YOU’RE TOSSING AND TURNING…

TRY THE 4-7-8 BREATH

Hold the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Close your mouth and inhale through your nose as you count to four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale through your mouth, making a whoosh sound again for a count of eight. Repeat the cycle three more times.

WHEN YOU’RE NERVOUS…

TRY THE 4-8 BREATH

Skip the seven-count hold here. With mouth closed and the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, inhale slowly through your nose to a count of four. Exhale slowly and completely through the mouth with a whoosh sound, to a count of eight. Repeat three times. #

PRO TIP #1: Heat and moisture is the most effective way to
soften skin and prime it for hair removal, so taking a shower or bath
before (or during) epilating will help reduce pain and redness.
PRO TIP #2: Exfoliation is essential to preventing ingrown hairs.
Pre-epilation, use a sugar scrub on your body, bikini line or legs, and
apply moisturizer after your hair removal to reduce irritation.
PRO TIP #3: Move against the direction of hair growth, as you’ll
lift and catch the smaller hairs, and be sure to take it slow to ensure
you remove each hair at the root without breaking any at the
surface (which can lead to in-grown hairs).
