Chapter 1: Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of Band-in-a-Box 2012.5 for Windows!
This documentation covers the new features in Band-in-a-Box 2012.5. The Help menu has a link to the full manual.

Band-in-a-Box 2012.5 is here!

We’ve been busy and have added some great new features and new RealTracks to Band-in-a-Box! Compared to
version 2012, this adds 15 new features, 101 new RealTracks, and 46 new MIDI SuperTracks.
Band-in-a-Box 2012.5 Features and additions
We’ve enhanced the MIDI style generation, by adding a new engine that generates MIDI SuperTracks. Instead of
MIDI styles based on C7 chord patterns that get repeated over every chord, the MIDI SuperTracks are based on
actual playing by studio musicians. Play the SuperTracks using your MIDI synth, or favorite VST plug-ins to get a
great sound using MIDI. We include 3 new MIDI SuperTracks sets (Pop/Country and Jazz) with piano, organ, and
bass MIDI SuperTracks – 46 MIDI SuperTracks in all.
We’ve also added other new MIDI features, such as selectable PPQ resolution for export of MIDI files (from 120 to
1920 PPQ). We’ve added new chord types including the diminished triad (Cdim5 has notes C, Eb, Gb), the “add2”
chord (Cadd2 = C, D, E, G), and “madd2” (Cmadd2 = C, D, Eb, G) plus a diminished chord Preference setting.
We’ve enhanced the RealTracks. There are 176 more RealTracks that have Simple Variations available now. With
2012 there were 43 RealTracks with Simple Variations. Now there are 219, which covers most of the RealTracks
that could benefit from a Simple Variation!
We’ve enhanced the display of the RealCharts, so that the notation, and guitar tab display is more accurate. We’ve
added new RealCharts for existing bass RealTracks, so you’ll see notation and bass display for them.
101 New RealTracks!
There are 101 new available RealTracks (compared to BB 2012), including great:

The New Features Are…
Here are the details of the new features.
MIDI SuperTracks

MIDI SuperTracks are MIDI tracks that can be added to a track or a style, and play like other MIDI tracks in a style.
They are called “SuperTracks” because they are generated using a different engine than typical MIDI style tracks.
Typical MIDI style tracks are generated from C7 patterns in the style, and repeat these patterns over any chord.
MIDI SuperTracks use actual MIDI playing from musicians (similar to RealTracks in that regard), so are not based
on patterns.
Selectable PPQ for MIDI Files
We’ve also added other new MIDI features, such as selectable PPQ resolution for export of MIDI files (from 120 to
1920 PPQ).
By default, Band-in-a-Box saves MIDI files with 120 PPQ resolution. This is about 4 millisecond resolution, which
is very good resolution. In our listening tests, people couldn’t tell the difference between files at 120 PPQ and files
at higher PPQ (like 960 etc.). But if you prefer to work in a DAW at a higher PPQ, you can now have Band-in-a-
Box output at the resolution that you want.
New Chord Types
We’ve added new chord types including the diminished triad (Cdim5 has notes C,Eb,Gb), the “add2” chord (Cadd2
= C,D,E,G), and “madd2” (Cmadd2 = C,D,Eb,G). There is a new setting in the Display preferences to “Treat dim
chord as a diminished triad (Cdim5) instead of Cdim7.” If set, Cdim enters a diminished triad and Cdim7 enters a
diminished 7th chord.
More RealTracks with Simple Variations
We’ve enhanced the RealTracks. There are 176 more RealTracks that have Simple Variations available now. With
2012 there were 43 RealTracks with Simple Variations. Now there are 219, which covers most of the RealTracks
that could benefit from a Simple Variation!
Enhanced RealCharts
We’ve enhanced the display of the RealCharts so that the notation and guitar tab display is more accurate. We’ve
added new RealCharts for existing bass RealTracks, so you’ll see notation and bass display for them.
There is nothing that you need to do for this; you should just notice an improved guitar display and notation on
many styles.
New Loops Features Added
The Loops dialog has been enhanced, with two new features:
- “Rename” button in the Pick a Loop dialog. This renames a loop.
- “Clone” button in the Pick a Loop dialog. This duplicates a loop, allowing you to use it with different
parameters.
Quick Select RealTracks Dialog
A Quick Select dialog has been added to the menu for the instrument radio buttons at the top of the screen, allowing
you to quickly select a RealTrack without having to open up the full dialog.
For example, to quickly set a piano RealTrack, right-click on the Piano radio button and choose “Quick..Add
RealTracks.”
Forced Synth Channel Option
Forced Channel option for Synth added to a track (to ensure that the synth will always play on any track).

Plus Important Features added in version 2012.
Band-in-a-Box 2012 added VST synth support for each track, so you can have multiple synths playing on your
songs. You can also use VST Audio Plug-ins (reverb, delay etc.) on each track. You can customize over 150 of the
Guitar based RealTracks using the new Guitar Amp Simulator that is included (AmpliTube CS). Version 2012
included “Direct Input” (clean signal) Guitar RealTracks for these, so all of the added effects come from the Guitar
Amp Simulator. It also added “Loops” support, so you can add your own or 3rd party loops to any Band-in-a-Box
track. The “BB Remote” app for iPhone, iPad, and Android was updated with new features. A Simpler
RealTracks setting was added – a checkbox that makes the RealTracks play a simpler (less busy or embellished)
arrangement. You can add MIDITracks individually; simply select your favorite MIDITrack from any style to
any track of your current song. EZ selection of “DrumGrooves” was added; these are different grooves within drum
styles.
101 new RealTracks added in version 2012 (compared to BB 2011), including:

Chapter 2: Summary of New Features 9

Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial
Using MIDI SuperTracks
To use MIDI SuperTracks, either:
1. Choose a style or song that has MIDI SuperTracks and press Play. Look in the MIDI SuperTracks Demos
folder for these songs
2. Add a MIDI SuperTrack to a certain track.
Adding a MIDI SuperTrack
For example, let’s add a MIDI SuperTrack to the Piano track.
Right-click on the Piano track label at the top of the screen to see a menu of options (or right-click on the Mixer’s
piano settings).

Choose “Select MIDI SuperTrack for this track.” You will now see a menu of available SuperTracks. There are 46
MIDI SuperTracks included with version 2012.5, so you may see up to 46. You can type filter text to narrow down
your search.

Once you choose a track, you will see that the Piano label has turned blue to indicate that it is a MIDI
SuperTrack.
For more information please see the MIDI SuperTracks chapter.

10 Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial

Selectable PPQ
By default, Band-in-a-Box saves MIDI files with 120 PPQ resolution. This is about 4 millisecond resolution, which
is very good resolution. In our listening tests, people couldn’t tell the difference between files at 120 PPQ and files
at higher PPQ (like 960 etc.). But if you prefer to work in a DAW at a higher PPQ, you can now have Band-in-a-
Box output at the resolution that you want.

Press the MIDI button, to open the Choose Destination for Standard MIDI File dialog.

Then click on [Options] to open the MIDI file options dialog.

Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial 11

You will see a “Resolution for MIDI file” combo box. Use it to select a MIDI file resolution from 120 to 1920 PPQ
(Pulses Per Quarter note).

Now any MIDI file that you make, by drag/drop or by using the MIDI button to save a MIDI file, will be at the
resolution that you have specified.
New Chord Types
We’ve added new chord types, including the diminished triad (Cdim5 has notes C, Eb, Gb), the “add2” chord
(Cadd2 = C, D, E, G), and “madd2” (Cmadd2 = C, D, Eb, G).

To use these chords, simply type them in as you would any chord. MIDI styles will play them correctly.
Note: Only the newest RealTracks will play the new chord types correctly, as there were no recordings of these chords with
the older RealTracks. So if you specify Cdim5 on an old RealTracks, you will hear Cdim (i.e. C diminished seventh), but on the
newer RealTracks and MIDI styles, you will hear them as Cdim5.

There is an added setting in the Display preferences to “Treat ‘dim’ chord as a diminished triad (Cdim5) instead of
Cdim7.”
There are two types of diminished chords, diminished triads (Cdim5) and diminished 7ths (Cdim7). You can spell
them out fully in Band-in-a-Box, or just enter them as Cdim. This setting controls if Cdim will represent Cdim5 or
Cdim7. If set, Cdim will enter a C diminished triad (Cdim5), and Cdim7 will enter a diminished 7th chord. These
work for chord entry and printout, and the Jazz symbols work for them.

12 Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial

Using Simple Variations

To see the list of RealTracks that have simple variations, open the
RealTracks Picker, and see the Simpler column, and note that the ones with
“s” in the column have a simpler variation available. You can choose this
simple variation by using the “Simpler” checkbox in the RealTracks Picker.

You can set the whole song to a simpler arrangement in the Song
Settings dialog, Edit | Settings (for This Song).

New Loops Features Added

The Pick a Loop dialog has been enhanced, with new features. The [Rename] button renames a loop.
The [Clone] button duplicates a loop, allowing you to use it with different parameters.

Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial 13

- Click on the [Rename] button to give a loop a new name.

- Click on the [Clone] button to duplicate a loop. You can then use it with different parameters.

Band-in-a-Box will automatically append numbers in sequence to the cloned file name, but you can also type in your
own name for the cloned file if you prefer.
Quick Select RealTracks Dialog
A Quick Select dialog has been added to the menu for the instrument radio buttons at the top of the screen, allowing
you to quickly select a RealTrack without having to open up the full dialog.
For example, to quickly set a piano RealTrack, right-click on the Piano radio button and choose
“Quick..Add RealTracks.”

You will then see a dialog that displays RealTracks and lets you quickly choose one. In this song, the Piano part is
actually playing guitar, and we are going to change it to banjo.

14 Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial

Here we have filtered the list by “banjo” so we only see banjo RealTracks.

The Memo field gives a description of the current selection in the list. When you have made your choice, press
[OK] to return to the main screen. Press Play to generate the song with the new RealTrack instrument.
Forced Synth Channel Option
Forced Channel option for Synth added to a track (to ensure that the synth will always play on any track).

VST Synth selection now has a forced channel option. If you set up a particular VST synth, you may have setup a
bass patch for channel 2 on the synth. If you would like this synth to always respond to any track, regardless of the
channel that it is on, then use the new forced channel feature and set it to channel 2. You can save this plug-in
selection (Save Group – which saves a TGS file), and then you can use this setup whenever you want to add this
synth to a track.
Also, in some synths (e.g. the Garritan Aria Player) you setup your patches in the synth user interface (and not in
Band-in-a-Box) by assigning patches to specific channels. Your setup can be saved in .TGS files. If a TGS file is
loaded that puts piano on channel 6, then you would want Band-in-a-Box to send the piano on channel 6 rather than
the Band-in-a-Box default of channel 3.

Chapter 3: QuickStart Tutorial 15

Chapter 4: MIDI SuperTracks
What are MIDI SuperTracks?
MIDI SuperTracks are MIDI tracks that can be added to a track or a style, and play like other MIDI tracks in a style.
They are called “SuperTracks” because they are generated using a different engine than typical MIDI style tracks.
Typical MIDI style tracks are generated from C7 patterns in the style, and repeat these patterns over any chord.
MIDI SuperTracks use actual MIDI playing from musicians (similar to RealTracks in that regard), so are not based
on patterns.
Using MIDI SuperTracks
To use MIDI SuperTracks, either:
1. Choose a style or song that has MIDI SuperTracks, and press play. (Look in the MIDI SuperTracks Demos
folder for these songs.)
2. Add a MIDI SuperTrack to a certain track.
For example, let’s add a MIDI SuperTrack to the Piano track.

Right-click on the Piano track label at the top of the screen to see a menu of options. Or you can right-click on the
Piano part in the Mixer window.

In either menu, choose “Select MIDI SuperTrack for this track.” You will now see a menu of available
SuperTracks. There are 46 MIDI SuperTracks included with version 2012.5, so you may see up to 46. You can
type filter text to narrow down your search.

16 Chapter 4: MIDI SuperTracks

Once you choose the track, you will see that the Piano label has turned blue to indicate that it is a
MIDI SuperTrack.
When you press Play, you will hear a much more sophisticated MIDI arrangement than a typical MIDI
style, since it is not based on C7 chord patterns; instead it is based on hours of actual MIDI playing from
a top studio musician.
You can also access the MIDI SuperTrack dialog from the RealTracks Picker, by pressing the
[Super] button.
Once you have selected a MIDI SuperTracks, you might want to assign a specific VST/DX instrument to play it. If
so, use the Mixer’s Plugins panel, and click on the first slot for the track that you want to set.

Chapter 4: MIDI SuperTracks 17

This will launch the VST/DX Synths/Plugins dialog, where you can set the first slot to the VSTi/DXi synth that you
want to play your track.

Each MIDI SuperTrack is assigned a number, like the MIDI Soloists or the RealTracks, so you can access the MIDI
SuperTracks from the Select Soloist dialog as well, and they are highlighted in cyan.

Once generated, MIDI SuperTracks behave like a regular MIDI track, and can be saved as MIDI files etc.
