Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Big and Little Letters

Objectives: Students will be able to recognize and name all upper and lowercase letters of the
alphabet.
Students will be able to know the difference of usage in all upper and lowercase letters

State Standards: 1.4 Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Context: Why are you teaching this particular lesson? What comes before this lesson in the
larger unit? What previous knowledge will students be bringing into the lesson? What comes
after this lesson in the larger unit? What are you teaching in order to prepare students for the
next lesson topic?
I am teaching this particular lesson because at this stage students should know the difference in
upper and lowercase letters and know when to use them. In the larger unit this lesson is taught by
a fun PowerPoint and game involving teaching the uppercase letters. Students will be bringing
in the knowledge of knowing and recognizing the uppercase letters. After this lesson, we will
learn to write them. I am teaching the difference in recognizing when to use these upper and
lowercase letters in order for writing to be correct and precise.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)
“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin Jr.
“My Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” paper book
“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” game on iPads
“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” puzzle
“Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” read aloud on youtube as a class
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
1. Begin by introducing the topic and reviewing what we learned in an earlier lesson to go
into our text topic

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

1. The teacher directed portion will be led by me reading the book “Chicka Chicka Boom
Boom” and discussing the letters and the difference between each upper and lowercase
letter
Collaborative (15 minutes):
1. This portion will be led by me introducing the booklet and what to do
2. Each student will receive a coloring book. Each page has a letter, upper and lowercase, so
students will learn to identify the uppercase with the lowercase
3. I will begin by telling the student to find the letter ___ and color it. This helps students
who do not fully recognize letters by learning from their peers without calling them out
4. I will assess them 4-5 more times before ending the collaborative session.
Independent Digital (20 minutes):
1. This portion will involve the game based off the book
2. If we have enough iPads for students they will work independently, but it is better for
special education students to work in pairs, so they can learn from each other
3. They will play games or songs to help them learn
4. If there are too many students for iPads I have a puzzle lined up for half of the
students to work on the puzzle which teaches them to recognizes the upper and
lowercase letters going together
5. After an allotted time, groups will switch
Closure (20 minutes):
1. I will end by calling students to the carpet and writing letters on the board
2. They will then tell me (individually) what is the matching upper/lowercase letter with it
3. To close the section, the video of the song version of the book will play up on the
Smartboard.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= App or website): Why this piece of multimedia? How does it support
student learning and your standards and objectives? How do you know it is of high-
quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support
your rationale.
It is extremely difficult to choose instructional games that are simple and easy to use for
preschool aged Special Needs children. I chose this game to give them an opportunity to get a
hands-on experience with an iPad and to learn and recognize the upper and lowercase letters. I
do not know if it is high quality; as I said before finding an instructional game on a piece of
technology is difficult
(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): Why this
piece of multimedia? How does it support student learning and your standards and
objectives? How do you know it is of high-quality? Refer to the 8 bullet points in the
Evaluating Multimedia PowerPoint to support your rationale.
I chose to listen to the song read aloud of the book as a class on the Smartboard to recap
and assess students’ knowledge. It assesses students’ knowledge and gives them closure on the
subject. I have watched the video which is catchy and very instructional.
