Counselors and identity
School counselors are qualified
educators that play a vital role in
student success through
leadership, advocacy, and
collaboration. School counselors
are an important part of the
educational leadership team and
provide valuable assistance to
students regardless of whether
they work in an elementary
school, middle school, or high
school. School counselor’s work
as a team member with school
staff, parents, and the
community to create a caring,
supportive atmosphere in which
students can achieve academic
success. School counselors helps
the child meet future needs by
doing individual or group
counseling, consulting with
parents, teacher, and other
educators, and through other
school support services or
community resources.
Standards and
Credentials
A school counselor is a
certified/licensed educator with
the minimum of a Master
Degree in counseling. School
counselors are held to ethical
and professional standard of the
American School Counseling
Association (ASCA).

through: Self-referral, teacher,
administrator, or staff referral,
parent referral, peer referral, or
through counselor observation.

face-to-face meeting.
Why are school
counselors important
Counselors play a vital role in
the education process
throughout every age. During
elementary school it is
essential students get a
positive start in developing
social skills. School counselors
at this age help students with
self-awareness, social skills,
and peer relationships. Middle
school is a time where
adolescence seeks approval of
their friends and could be a
very crucial time period.
Counselors work with this age
group to focus with coping
strategies, conflict resolution,
peer relationships, and
identity issues. High school is a
transition period into
adulthood. Students become
more independent and receive
more freedom. This time is
crucial for career planning.
Counselors work either one on
one or in a group setting to
help students understand
strengths and weaknesses.
Consolers also help with
sensitive issues such as sex,
suicide, alcohol, drugs, and
romantic relationships.
