Global Green and Health Hospital Network

The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network (GGHHN) is a worldwide community of
hospitals, health care systems, and organizations dedicated to reducing the ecological footprint of
health care operations, in order to promote environmental and public health. The Network is
based on members' commitment to implement the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda
by developing more sustainable practices and by measuring progress over time. The GGHH

GGHH: Know the Issue

An introduction to the network

The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network (GGHHN) is a worldwide community of
hospitals, health care systems, and organizations dedicated to reducing the ecological footprint of
health care operations, in order to promote environmental and public health. The Network is
based on members' commitment to implement the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda
by developing more sustainable practices and by measuring progress over time. The GGHH
community shares solutions and best practices. GGHH is a project of Health Care Without
Harm.

The Issue

We face a public health crisis involving widespread human disease and death. The World Health
Organization (WHO) has defined environmental factors such as unsafe drinking water, poor
sanitation and hygiene, indoor and outdoor pollution, workplace hazards, industrial accidents,
automobile accidents, climate change, poor land use practices, and poor natural resource
management. We believe that these same environmental factors are the causes of our prevailing
public health issues.

Climate change is expected to greatly contribute to these environmental factors, thus magnifying
the incidence of disease and death. Diseases can become unpredictable, shelters can be rendered
vulnerable, food and water can become scarce, there can very well be extreme climate events
which could cause heat-related sickness and population migration.

As part of the health sector, we play a key role in reducing our own ecological footprint as we
promote public environmental health.

The 10 Agenda
The GGHH aims to promote greater sustainability and environmental health in the health sector,
as well as support existing efforts around the world. Through these efforts, we hope to create a
global health care network that is both greener and more unified.

To achieve this, we’ve created a framework made up of ten interconnected goals. Each contains a
series of Action Items for hospitals and health systems to implement. Most hospitals will want to
focus on two or three goals, and chart a course for specific steps to achieve them, with a plan to
subsequently move on to the next challenge.

1. LEADERSHIP

Agenda intent:

• Prioritize environmental health as a strategic imperative.

• Demonstrate leadership support for green and healthy hospitals in order to: create long-term
organizational culture change; realize widespread hospital worker and community engagement;
and foster public policy that promotes environmental health.

Agenda intent:

• Substitute harmful chemicals with safer alternatives.

• Improve the health and safety of patients, staff, communities and the environment by using
safer chemicals, materials, products and processes, going beyond the requirements of
environmental compliance.

Agenda intent:

• Reduce, Treat, and Safely Dispose of Health Care Waste.

• Protect public health by reducing the volume and toxicity of waste produced by the health
sector, while implementing the most environmentally sound waste management and disposal
options.

4. ENERGY

Agenda intent:

• Implement energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy generation.

• Reduce fossil fuel energy use as a means to improve and protect public health; foster energy
efficiency as well as alternative, renewable energy use with the long-term goal of 100% of
energy needs to be supplied by on-site or community renewable energy sources.

5. WATER

Agenda intent:

• Reduce hospital water consumption and supply potable water.

• Implement a series of conservation, recycling, and treatment measures to reduce hospital water
consumption and wastewater pollution. Establish the relationship between potable water
availability and health care resilience to withstand physical, natural, economic and social
disruption. Promote public environmental health by providing potable water for the community.
