1. Palembang
Akibatnya penghasilan tukang perahu ketek kini
berkurang.

1. Palembang
2. Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra. The city that is located on the banks of Musi
River is the second largest city in Sumatra after Medan. Palembang was once the center
of an ancient kingdom in Indonesia called Sriwijaya. Sriwijaya in its heyday was the
largest kingdom in Southeast Asia extending to Vietnam. Unfortunately, there are not
many remains from the glorious time of the Sriwijaya kingdom found in Palembang. Even
the information about the falling empire has only been confirmed in the 1920s by a
French archeologist George Coedes, who published his findings in the Dutch and
Indonesian language.
3. Musi River divides the city of Palembang and once served as waterway to the inlands.
Although roads now replace this function, boats are still used to get across the river. The
boats are equipped with motors that sound like "tek ketek ketek" so people started calling
these "boats," ketek. Besides humans, ketek transports goods and is also used as a
marketplace to sell ice blocks, food, or fruits. However, since the rehabilitation of the Musi
River banks, a cruise ship operates to take tourists on a short voyage. Before, tourists
use ketek during the day. This resulted in a lower income for the ketek-men.
