Facts or Generalizations

It indicates what the speaker believes about a fact that was true before, is true now, and will be true in the future. It is also
used to make generalizations about people or things.
The Simple Present Tense with the verb Be has three specific uses:

USE 1. Personal or General Information


You can talk about your own information like name, age, nationality, etc, using the verb Be. Look at the next chart:

USE 2 Description
The verb Be also permits you to describe, qualify or limit something or someone. Follow the next examples:

She is beautiful, young, thin and tall

HOW IS SHE?
She is kind, hardworking, happy and honest

WHAT IS HE LIKE?
He is handsome, athletic, strong and fashioned

HOW IS HE?
He is gentle, intelligent, responsible and collaborative

USE 3. Relationship
The verb Be can also establish the relationship between two people. Look at the next examples.

 Richard and Gabriela are married, so Richard is HER husband and Gabriela is HIS wife.
 Daniel, Rita and Bryan are in class, so Daniel is HER classmate, Bryan is HIS classmate and Rita is
THEIR classmate too.
 Rodrigo and William live in La Magdalena, that’s why Rodrigo is WILLIAM’S neighbor and William
is RODRIGO’S neighbor.

NOTICE. To establish a relationship, you need to use a Possessive word. The next are Possessive words:
