Chapter 6: Defining Binomial Equations

Victor, Brooke, Dante

A random variable is if the value of x is a given experiment or observation is a chance or random

outcome. The value of x could be the chance of getting heads twice in a coin flip. The discrete

random variable can only take a countable number of variables, like ordering a pizza because

you cannot order a fraction of a pizza. Where as the continuous random variable can only take

any countless number of values in a line interval, like measuring someone.

Probability distributions and key components is a probability distribution has a probability

assigned to each value of the variable, and the sum of all probabilities will be equal to one. Mean

& standard deviation, and what they tell us about a probability distribution is the μ is the

population mean and the σ is the standard deviation. To find the mean you add up all the values

in the data set and divide by the total number of values added. To calculate standard deviation

you find the mean and then square root it to find the standard deviation .

The expected value is what can be found after your experiment when you examine your data it

is the probability of the event to happen. If there are 8 people the expected value that they can all

wink is 66% assuming that 95% of the population is able to wink. Binomial experiment and key

components, the binomial experiment has to be a success or failure an example is if you can

wink or not. The key components are fixed number of trials, trials are independent, only two

outcomes success or failure, probability of success is the same, and probability of r successes out
of n trials. N, P, Q, and R, N represents the fixed number of trials so if eight students come into

class the eight is the fixed number of trials. P represents the probability of success so if eight kids

come into class the probability that seven can wink is .279. Q represents the probability of failure

which is found by 1-the probability of success so in this case it would be .721. Finally R would

be what’s the probability that 7 out of 8 students can wink the 7 represents R. Computing

binomial probabilities can be found with a calculator using BinomPdf or BinomCdf and plugging

in the (N,P,R) into the program. We can also use the binomial probability chart to compute the

data by looking at the data given in the problem and move down the chart. Mean and standard

deviation, the mean in binomial probability distribution represents the population and the

probability of that population succeeding or failing. An example of this mean is when there are 8

people and 95% of the population can wink the mean is 7.60 meaning that 7.60 in the test should

be able to wink. Standard deviation in this situation is used to find the spread of the data this can

be used by square rooting (8*.95*.05) leading to a standard deviation of .62 meaning there is a

very low spread of data which means there is less extremes and the results are more similar.
Probability of Winking

97% of people can wink with at least one eye. In a group of 8 people, what is the probability

that more than 5 can wink? What is the probability that exactly 7 can wink?-

There is a .994 chance that more than 5 people can wink. There is a .279 chance that exactly 7

people who come in class can wink. This experiment meets the criteria of a binomial experiment

because there are only two outcomes, one being success people being able to wink, or failure the

people not being able to wink. When trying to find how many people more than 5 can wink I had

to type 1-binomcdf(8,.97,4) into my calculator this allowed me to find .994, which means there is

a 99% chance of having more than 5 people coming into the classroom and being able to wink. I

then had done a similar thing on my calculator to find the exact probability of 7 people coming

into the classroom and being able to wink. I found this probability by using binompdf(8,.97,7) in
my calculator which lead to me finding that there is only a .279 chance of exactly 7 people being

able to wink, which means there is around a 28% chance of there being exactly 7 people

winking. I chose to use both a calculator to find the probability and a table to check my answers.

I had decided to use a calculator to get the most accurate response for the question so my answer

is the most accurate. The answers I found told me that there is a high chance for someone to walk

into the classroom to be able to wink, this answer is what we expected since it is common for

most people to blink.
