Research methodology is often regarded as a theme that should interest scientists only.

While in my view
choosing a proper methodology is extremely practical: when used correctly, it can greatly enhance the
usefulness of both scientific studies and consultancy projects. This chapter was written to illustrate this
viewpoint.

In this chapter the NETLIPSE research is presented as a case study of a successful practical research
approach. The research was carried out in 2006-2008, was sponsored by the European Commission (EC)
and involved many organisations. The research consisted of a qualitative approach to finding best
practices and lessons learnt in the management and organisation of Large Infrastructure Projects (LIPs)
(transport) in Europe, the ultimate goal being to gather information that could help improve the PM and
organisation of these projects in the future.

At the end of this chapter, the reader can:

 understand the practical research approach carried out in the NETLIPSE research case to identify
best practices and lessons learnt;

 understand how using a qualitative triangulation approach helped provide scientific sound results;

 understand how stakeholder involvement in the research resulted in a broad acceptance of

research results.
