Important gift to the state of Victoria
On Monday 27 September, Minister for Slovenes Abroad Dr Bostjan Zeks will present Victorian Arts Minister Peter Batchelor with a valuable gift from the people of Slovenia to the people of Victoria. It will be the highlight of Dr Zeks’ first official visit to Australia. The gift, a facsimile limited edition of the magnificent 17-volume Iconotheca Valvasoriana, will become part of the collection of the State Library of Victoria. Dr Bostjan Zeks is a distinguished scientist and former head of the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Scientists. In Victoria, he will be visiting the Slovenian Associations in Geelong and Eltham and the Slovenian Catholic Mission in Kew. The State Library of Victoria reception will be the main public focus of his visit. While in Australia, he will also be visiting Slovenian communities in Queensland, ACT and New South Wales. The Hon Peter Batchelor, MP, Victorian Minister for the Arts, will join the Hon John Cain, President of the Library Board of Victoria, and CEO and State Librarian Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, in welcoming Dr Zeks to the State Library of Victoria. The State Library of Victoria reception commences at 6pm on Monday 27 September and includes a brief speech from Dr Zeks describing the cultural significance of this gift to the Australian nation. Iconotheca Valvasoriana represents the personal library collection of Janez Vajkard Valvasor, scholar, scientist, soldier, historian, cartographer and publisher. It contains more than 7,800 maps, images of copperplate and wood carving art of the 16 th and 17th centuries, and the works of masters such as Rembrandt, Durer and Cranach. Valvasor created the collection during his travels in Europe between 1659 and 1672. The original collection is part of the Croatian State Archives. Only 100 facsimile editions of the work exist and copies have been given to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Society of London. They are described as a printing masterpiece and took 10 years to complete. Each set is valued at A$43,400.
