WELCOME TO THE “QUEEN BEE’S FLIGHT”!

This welcome e-book is intended to help you get acquainted with the area and our home.
You also will find a hard copy of this guide in the house, which you are welcome to take
out with you during your stay so you needn't print this out.

THE HOUSE

The house was fully renovated in early 2018. We have sought to fully equip our home by
trying to anticipate your needs and providing all things necessary for a comfortable and
pleasant stay.

EXPERIENCE

The house is located in the center of Kontomari village, 17 km from Chania and just a 5’
drive to the nearest beach. It combines the beauty and tranquility of rural Crete whilst
being only a few minutes drive from bustling, more tourist-oriented areas such as
Platanias. Several off the beaten path activities and sights are within 30’ drive, while all
the famous beaches of west Crete are easy to access from Kontomari.

All our recommendations included in this book are of places we too use to visit and
enjoy. If you have any question not covered in here, please do get in touch and let us
know how we can help.

We hope you enjoy yoursef and visit again in the future. If you feel like it you may sign
the guestbook and please leave a review online to let us know how your stay was.

ARRIVAL INFORMATION

CHECK-IN TIME

Check-in time is 3pm. We can sometimes arrange an early check-in so please contact us if
you will arrive early and we'll do our best, without any promises! We suggest you refer
to the section on what to do if you arrive early - there is plenty to keep you entertained!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

If you are arriving via car and have a GPS system in the car, use Kontomari as a reference
point. The house is next to the main church and someone will be there to pick you up.
If you do not have a GPS device, you can find us by driving to direction
Kissamos(Kastelli). If you take the new road, exit at Platanias and join the old road
westbound. A few minutes drive after Platanias you will see a small sign on the left
handside “Kontomari 2km”. Take a left turn there and the road will lead you to the
village. You might also use this link of our house in Google:
https://goo.gl/maps/iHJM94UCtbT2

GETTING HERE BY BUS

If you are travelling without a car you may want to use the public bus services. There are
3 lines servicing Kontomari, though only one of them gets inside the village and only
twice a week. The other two lines run approximately every 30’ from Chania central bus
station and drop you off on the main road, bus stop “Pirgos Psilonerou”. From there it’s
1,5 km to the house.

PARKING

There is no parking onsite. We recommend parking at the large public space behind the
church. It is less than 30m from the house.

3
DEPARTURE INFORMATION

We hope you had a wonderful holiday and wish you safe travels back home. We'd love to see
you again next year!

CHECK-OUT TIME

Check-out time is 12pm. Should you require a later check-out we will do our best, so let
us know beforehand. If we have guests arriving that day it will be almost impossible to
offer a late check-out due to the time needed to prepare the house.

CLEANING

You will find the house clean on arrival but please let us know if you are not satisfied. We
choose not to charge for cleaning costs, therefore we would much appreciate it if you
could leave the house relatively clean and tidy when you leave. No need for you to
perform a full clean!

ENJOYING YOUR TIME AT THE VILLAGE

KONTOMARI

Kontomari village itself is full of rich olive groves, orange groves, vineyards and colourful
blooming gardens. Apart from its natural beauty though, the village also has a glorious
history: it is one of the villages of the Network of Martyr villages of Greece since, on 2
June 1941, its residents were executed by the barbarian Nazi occupants.

Therefore you are encouraged to wander through the village, find and explore it’s beauty.
Also, don’t forget to visit the memorial site.

AT THE HOUSE

Everything in our house is available for you to use. There are a few books, some board
games and a few kid puzzles for the whole family to enjoy, while you are spending time
at the house in between of your outdoor excursions. A new smart tv is also available
and NetFlix is preinstalled should you be missing your favourite tv series! It is pretty
easy to use, just press “Netflix” on the remote and choose the guest account.

VISIT TO THE APIARY

An extra activity provided by us is a visit to our apiary. The apiary is in Kontomari, a

short drive from the house. Our father who is a long time beekeeper maintains the
apiary and will be happy to give a tour. Wearing protective equipment you will learn
how the beehive is organized and what is the beekeeper’s role. You may also try honey
from the hive and might even get to see a queen bee!

The visit is free of charge but is subject to the weather and the availability of the beekeeper!
Please let us know beforehand in order to coordinate the visit.

TO THE BEACH!

The beaches of Pyrgos Psilonerou,Maleme and Gerani are all 5’ drive from the house.

If you are looking for more we suggest the following beaches:

• Afrata: Great small and quiet beach with a little taverna. 30 minutes drive from the
house

• Menies: Beautiful secluded beach, around 1 hour to get there from the house. Very
scenic route, though the last part might not be too easy to drive on a non 4X4 car. Also
accessible via boat from Platanias *Bring water/food with you!

Also, the following are probably the most famous beaches of the island. They are usually crowded at
the peak of the summer, but they are still beautiful and worth a visit...

• Falasarna: Popular, very beautiful sandy beaches (3 of them)

• Balos: Astonishing scenery. Less than 1 hour drive plus 15' walk to the beach with great
view from the top. Boats from Kissamos to Balos is a more "touristic" option but you get
to see more. *Note that Balos is a lagoon.

• Elafonisi: 1 hour and 15 minutes. Famous, beautiful huge beach with very shallow
waters perfect for kids.
