Lesson Title: Word Problems/Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Teacher Material: Math worksheets, pencil, whiteboards, Multiplication Table

Student Materials: Pencil, whiteboard, Multiplication Table, Math Worksheet

Introduction of Lesson

Objective: Given the worksheet Operation and Algebraic Thinking, students will review

how to solve multistep word problems by working on the math worksheet Operation and

Algebraic Thinking with a minimum of a 60%.

Set: Begin the lesson by explaining to students that we will be reviewing how to solve

multistep word problems by using the Operation and algebraic thinking math worksheet.

Activities and Procedures

1. Input: Begin the lesson by asking students to think about why it is important to

solve word problems. Students may suggest the following:

 To solve math problems

 To do good in homework

Allow students to share with one another

2. Explain to students that word problems teach us how to become creative thinkers

and will help us become independent thinkers and we will come up with creative

ways of solving word problems.

Modeling: I Do: I will read the first word problem to you and underline key

words. I will solve the word problem step by step for the students to see the

example. We Do: After showing the students how to solve the first word problem

we will work on the rest of the word problems together using the whiteboards to

show how we solve the word problem. You Do: After working on the word

problems together as a class and answering any questions students might have. I

will give students a second worksheet to work on independently answering 5

word problems.

Checking For understanding: I will ask students questions about the word

problems throughout, I will ask students what is the word problem asking us to

solve? Using the whiteboard students will show their work on how they got their

answer.
Guide Practice: Students will work on math worksheet underlining key words

and solving step by step every math problem. After working on the first

worksheet and checking for understanding students will be given the second

worksheet and answer 5 word problems.

Concluding the Lesson:

Closure: We solved 5 word problems on the Operation and Algebraic thinking

math worksheet together, now you will solve 5 word problems independently

when you are done you will turn them in to me.

Independent practice: Handout the word problem worksheet to students and

have them work independently.
