Calculation of U-values

Find the U-values of :

a) Single-glazed window (answer = 5.44 W/m2K)

b) Double-glazed window (answer = 2.72 W/m2K)

Give:
1. Thickness of glass = 4mm
2. Thermal conductivity of glass = 1.02 W/mK
3. Thermal resistance of surface: 0.12 (inside), 0.06 (outside) m2 K/W
4. Thermal resistance of 20mm wide airspace = 0.18 m2 K/W
a) Calculate the U-value of a cavity wall with half-brick outer leaf, 100mm wide
cavity without insulation, 100mm thick aerated concrete block inner leaf and
12mm thick layer of lightweight plaster
(Answer = 0.68 W/m2 K)
b) Repeat the calculations if the cavity is provided with 100mm thick mineral wool
(Answer = 0.26 W/m2 K)

Given:
Thermal conductivities (W/ mK);
1. Aer. Concrete block = 0.11
2. Lightweight plaster = 0.16
3. Brickwork = 0.84
4. Mineral wool = 0.04
5. Inside surface resistance = 0.12
6. Outside surface resistance = 0.06
7. Airspace resistance = 0.18 m2 K/W
A cavity wall is constructed as follows: brickwork outer leaf
103mm, air gap 50mm, expanded insulation board 50mm,
lightweight concrete block inner leaf 115mm, lightweight
plasterboard 10mm.
Given:
1. K-value for brickwork (0.84), polystyrene (0.025), concrete
block (0.18) and plasterboard (0.18)
2. R-value for outside surface (0.06), inside surface (0.12)
and air gap (0.18)

Calculate the U-value of this wall.

Answer (0.315 W/ m2 K)
• A 3 bedroom semi-detached house has a total
window area of 20 m2 with a mixture of 16 m2
double glazing and 4 m2 single glazing. The
U-values are 1.8 W/m2 K for double glazing
and 2.8 W/m2 K for single glazing. Calculate
the average U-value for the windows.

Answer : 2.00 W/m2 K

• A blockwork wall measures 5 m x 2.8 m in
overall length and height. The wall contains
one window 1400 mm x 800 mm and one
door 1900 mm x 750 mm. The U-value for
blockwork (0.58), window (5.6), door (3.4).
