Late? It’s No Longer Traffic Making You Tardy!

Introduction:

3.6 million Americans travel over 90 minutes to get to work, but by reducing commutes

by 60 minutes, each commuter would free up the equivalent of over 20 days a year (Ingraham 1).

While a commute decrease of this proportion may not be easily attainable, cities can achieve

slight reductions to commute times by minimizing traffic congestion through mathematical

models of traffic scenarios. With even minor modifications having the potential to affect large

amounts of people, cities should regularly use mathematics to adapt to increased traffic flow and

problem areas. Such adaptations can lead to a happier, more productive community as people

have more time to work to support their family and take part in activities more enjoyable than

sitting in excessive traffic. ​This paper will detail the construction of a mathematical model

for the intersection between Clarksville Pike (Maryland 108) and Sheppard Lane as shown

in Fig. 1. Additionally, the researcher will draw a conclusion as to whether the addition of a

turning lane on Sheppard Lane would be worth the cost.

Background:

This paper is based off of prior work in traffic modeling, but will not repeat previous

papers in the field. While significant research has been done on effective traffic models for

various scenarios, no one paper can explain the most effective construction of any particular

intersection due to variations in traffic flow and existing road structures. Additionally, the

potential drawbacks of long commutes are discussed in both academic and mainstream media

sources, but there are very few academic sources on cost versus worth analyses for potential

roadwork, which is one topic that this paper will explore. In summary, some information will be

drawn from the existing sources, yet these only relate to each section of this paper, not to the

combined whole or the particular application.

Mathematical models have long been used to gather information on real-world processes

and scenarios in a more cost and time effective way. Accurate numerical models allow

researchers to gather data on situations without having to reenact every option. For example,

when looking at the probability of two submarines detecting each other in various positions, each

combination of positions would have to be testing to ensure a complete understanding of the

scenario. This would cost a company time, money, and manpower. On the contrary, a

mathematical model, when paired with a computer program, can give almost perfect results for

billions of scenarios in a matter of seconds.

Traffic modeling in particular has been evolving for almost a century. In 1934, Bruce

Greenshields proposed a relationship between the speed of cars and the distance between them, a

concept with which he created what he called “the fundamental diagram” (Fig. 2); however,

interest in the field truly began to escalate in 1935 after his updated proposition related speed to

traffic density (Fig. 3) (van Wageningen-Kessels 9). Many new models have been derived from

this father model. While further research was conducted in relationships between traffic data,

macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic traffic models began to “describe how traffic states

evolve over time” (van Wageningen-Kessels 13). Microscopic models follow patterns of

individual cars, while mesoscopic models describe traffic in discrete clusters of multiple cars,

and macroscopic models illustrate traffic as a continuum. Historically, more research was

conducted with microscopic models, but currently there is a larger focus on macroscopic models.

In order to understand the body of the paper clearly, a few terms must be defined.

Absenteeism is “the number of days absent from work… during a certain period” (van Ommeren

1) and can be used as a measure of workplace productivity. High absenteeism, when tied to

longer commutes, can support construction that reduces commute times. Cellular automata are

“​discrete, abstract computational systems that [are] useful... as general models of complexity

and... more specific representations of non-linear dynamics” (Berto 1). Computer programs fill

grids of cells with probabilities or binary numbers based on algorithms or differential equations.

Cellular automata can model traffic and may be applicable to this problem. Queuing theory is the

study of waiting lines, also called queues, used to optimize the profit of a business by finding a

balance between long lines and unnecessary service providers (Beasley 1). In this scenario, it can

be applied to the cost of adding a longer turning lane versus the detriments of traffic buildup.

The problems surrounding the Sheppard Lane/ MD-108 intersection have implications for

multiple age groups. On a weekday morning during the school year, it is very common for

Sheppard Lane to back up as cars wait to turn on Clarksville Pike (Route 108). One likely cause

for this backup is the proximity to MD-32, a relatively large highway; however this left turn onto

108 is also the last step for many student drivers whose destination is River Hill High School.

This traffic congestion increases the commuting times for both high schoolers as well as

commuters who must pass through this intersection. There are many instances in which cars who

wish to turn right are unable to due to their position in line behind cars waiting to turn left, so the

researcher has explored whether or not the addition of a turning lane may be an effective way to

decrease the traffic problems at this intersection. Fig. 5 shows an aerial map view of the

intersection with the proposed paths with the most congestion.

Discussion of Methods:

A variety of theories will be employed to attempt to model this traffic problem. One

possible method would be to code a cellular automaton, which would consist of creating a grid in

the shape of the intersection and filling each box with a zero or one representing whether or not

there is a car in that position. This would allow multiple sections to be tested efficiently due to

the project being completed in Matlab, but could be complicated to code and debug. Another

possibility would be to solve a differential equation or a system of equations that models the

traffic flow. This would be based on literature in the field currently and could potentially involve

methods commonly used in a differential equations course; however, it may be more difficult to

understand due to complex notation used in the field. Additionally, the researcher could model it

with a Markov chain, a linear algebra concept that describes random movement between states.

This may be more simple, but may not correctly model the complexity of the problem. Queuing

Theory may also be used to analyze the effectiveness of the new road in terms of money spent

versus eventual gain, but cannot be the sole mathematical theory employed. Estimations for the

cost of the road will be based on observation and research on typical road construction fees as

“costs per mile of road depend on location, terrain, type of construction, number of lanes, lane

width, durability, number of bridges, etc” (American Road and Transportation Builders

Association 1).​ Some of the data points inputted into the model will also be based on logical

manipulation of both research and other data.

The researcher expects the addition of a turning lane, even when optimized, to not

produce an immediate economic impact; however, it may have lasting positive benefits for the

community. Based on preliminary research, building roads is incredibly expensive and can be

millions of dollars per mile, especially with the addition of land-clearing costs (​American Road

and Transportation Builders Association 1)​. In that area specifically, these challenges would be

digging into a hill and moving the power lines and traffic light as seen in Fig. 4. However,

qualitative data in the form of prior experience indicates that a turning lane would improve

commute times due to the frequency of right turners being trapped behind left turners when there

are gaps for them to turn. Because the majority of traffic that would come from the left instead

turns into River Hill High School before the intersection, there are plenty of gaps for right

turners.

Procedures:

In order to collect the necessary data, the researcher first identified that the types of data

needed could be extracted from some sort of visual of the intersection throughout the time of

interest. For the data collection, she acquired three GoPros and mounting devices. Prior to the

data collection day, She spent a few hours in the middle of the day walking through the

intersection and placing the GoPros. Additionally, she learned how to use the GoPro cameras and

concluded that a time lapse mode would be the most effective for data collection. On the day of

data collection, she collected pictures every two seconds for the 30 minute time period from 7:00

am to 7:30 am. She set up the cameras at 6:15 in the morning in a (successful) attempt to avoid

getting hit by a car.

In order to collect the necessary information from the data collected, Clara had to analyze

almost one thousand pictures, counting how many cars arrived and left in each two second

interval in addition to which direction they turned. She also looked at information such as when

the light was red vs. green (counting yellow as green because from previous experience, she

knows that most drivers treat the yellow light at that intersection as if it was green). She then

used the numbers collected to create rates to substitute into her model.

Results:

Based on the results of this project, the researcher concludes that a turning lane will

reduce traffic buildup but may not be worth the expensive cost of construction. Analysis of the

data indicates that a four car turning lane (defined as a turning lane where a car can still enter the

lane if four cars build up in the other lane) will not have a drastic difference when compared to a

three car turning lane.

Conclusion:

While the addition on a turning lane will not produce an immediate economic impact, it

would have lasting positive benefits for the community. Research indicates significant benefits

for the community due to decreased commute times. Longer commutes are tied to social, health,

and productivity detriments long-term (Ingraham 1). Time spent driving is time taken away from

spending time with family and friends, preventing social interaction that is necessary for humans.

This extra time could also be spent catching up on sleep, and other health problems arise from

the time spent stationary in a sitting position. Finally, shorter commutes are also tied to lower

absence rates from work, leading to increased productivity which will help the economic

situation of the community as a whole (van Ommeren 1).

One common problem with optimizing intersections is the possibility that more people

will choose to drive on “faster” roads, which will cause traffic to increase to previous levels.

However, the researcher does not agree that this effect will extend to the MD-108/Sheppard Lane

intersection. River Hill students often drive out of necessity. They either need to be able to drive

to an internship after school, or leave school at a time later than the buses, or they miss the bus.

With so many students already driving, even a better traffic situation will still not be perfect,

therefore deterring any additional drivers. Additionally, River Hill is creating a new program

next year, JumpStart, which will pull students districted to other schools to River Hill. With the

necessity of self-transportation, the number of people required to drive at that time will only

increase, so action needs to be taken to reduce this impending influx.

While this specific model cannot be used for other intersections as it currently exists,

modifications can be made to achieve this goal. However, even if no other applications can be

found, the work of this paper still has the ability to positively affect the entire River Hill

community.
