Review – Unit 4 – Polynomials, Factoring and Quadratics

Remember: (a + b) 2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 (a - b) 2 = a2 - 2ab + b2 (a + b)(a – b) = a2 - b2

1. Add or subtract these polynomials as indicated. Make sure you write the answers in simplest terms.
a. 20m2 p – 6mp − (7mp2 − 7m2 p) + 6mp − 12pm2 b. (22s + 17) + (10 – 27s ) + 14s

c. (5𝑤 − 7𝑦) − 2(3𝑤 − 5𝑦) d. 2(3c2 – 10c + 5) - (3c2 – 8c) + 7

2. Simplify by multiplying out and combining like terms. Try to do it without using a box or writing down
intermediate steps, but DO check your work. Use special products patterns when possible.
a. 5pt(4pt – 6p2t + 9) b. 17y(2z+x) – 5y(6x + zy)

c. (𝑥 − 3𝑦)(2𝑥 − 𝑦) d. (x – 7)(x + 7)
e. (𝑟 + 2𝑤)(𝑟 − 3𝑤) f. (7x + 5)2

g. (x – 5)(x - 5) h. (3𝑥 + 𝑦)(3𝑥 − 𝑦)

3. Write expressions for the Areas and Perimeters of the following figures:
x cm
5a + b miles

(x + 5) cm a miles

Perimeter_______________ Perimeter_______________
Area __________________ Area __________________

4. Factor these polynomials:

35x2y2 + 7x3y3 -4abc + 8abc – 2abc 24y2 + 2y

(2z - 3)(x-1) – (2z+1)(x-1) (2a + b)(a+c) – (2a+c)(a-c) x3 + 2x2 + x

What kind of factoring did you do in each of these 6 problems?

5. Factor these polynomials (note: they are NOT trinomials – do not factor them like trinomials!):
xy – 2y – 4x + 8 2xy + 3y + 2x + 3

P2q2 – 10 – 2q2 + 5p2 21x2 + 6xy – 49x – 14y

What kind of factoring did you do in each of these 4 problems?

6. We learned three factoring patterns to recognize. Write the patterns in the spaces provided:
Difference of squares Perfect square – addition Perfect square - subtraction

7. Factor the following polynomials, using the factoring patterns or one of the three methods of factoring
trinomials. Use whatever method you wish, unless a method is specified for you.
Use Guess & Check:

x2 + x - 12 x2 + 20x – 100 y2 + 14y – 51 a2 – 121

Use Grouping:

6b – 19b + 15 10t3 + 11t2 + 3t 9x2 + 3x + 2 x2 + 6xy – 16y2
8. Linear, exponential or quadratic function?
