Personification

Pearl is an adventurer girl with many different views of having fun than some children

her age. Hawthorne portrays this by writing, n”The great black forest — stern as it showed itself

to those who brought the guilt and troubles of the world into its bosom - became he playmate of

the lonely infant, as well as it knew how”(Hawthorne 168). The forest is given qualities of a hu-

man, in which a forest cannot obtain in order to show Pearl’s interest in it. By doing so, it is dis-

played that the lack forest welcomes the trouble of the world, which in this case was pearl, and

takes her in. Hawthorne uses personification to demonstrate how the forest in the novel cares for

the girl and makes her feel comfortable. Through the use of personification, Hawthorne gives

more meaning and importance to the forest and how it takes her in. The words, “brought the guilt

and troubles of the world”, also help explain that Pearl is not an angel, but in the worlds eyes,

one of the troubles.
