Another 2 miles... I was completely exhausted when Sushi said those words. He sounded so cool and bouncy.
Sushi has the largest tummy I have ever seen my entire life. It went increasing with his age. But he tried the best in casing those bulging with loose shirts hanging around his pelvis.
I guess we are near Gob said while he mopped the sweat from his forehead.
Your guess...what the hell does that mean?
Gob used to read books and masturbate to the characters on that hill. Still how can he miss that? I asked him while I was still gasping for a breath.
He gave a weird explanation and started walking again. Gob is a huge man with slight inferiority for his body color.
There was a long straight road ahead of us with over painted four storey buildings to the sides. We walked through that hoping it would lead us to the Hill.
We went on walking and to the end of that road we could see Municipality’s Trash Land. It was crammed with entire Kalyan's trash. Some of the polythene bags were old as India. The pit covered the base of the hill. It gave a resemblance of Himalaya but instead of snow it was garbage.
We made up our way and started walking on the so called STEPS. Steps were steep enough for a lucky fall.
Every step I took; the only thing which was bothering me was why the hell I am climbing this shit.
After burning at least a kilogram of fat, we reached the hill top.
For an instant I believed I would die from lack of air. I was gasping for a pint of air. I should quit smoking and start working out again. I must have accumulated loads of fat around my tummy. I was even fatter than Lolan. Lolan was the fattest guy in the group. He crossed the 50 kg mark on his 3rd Birthday.
We walked to the temple which was right in middle of the hill. Temple looked old but it clearly showed the local peoples devotion with garlands lying to the sides of the temple. Bushes covered its concrete wall which made it look as if temple wore a green garb. Municipality tried their best not to miss their regular white wash programs at the temple walls, which eventually made it look like an Indian airlines Air hostess.
Temple had a saffron flag wielding to the tunes of wind. It kept dancing to the tunes set by the wind without any faltering. We humans dance the same way in their entire life, dancing to the tunes of others. Trying to live like others, impersonating them in everything and trying to prove they are unique.
There was a small, nicely carved concrete steps leading to the temple. We walked through the steps and landed ourselves in front of the idol. The temple door was closed. It had tiny bells attached to the silver bars placed on the doors. There were some college students sitting and chatting on the steps leaning there back to the temple door.
If it was Kerala, the locals would have broken his spine by now. We Keralites do believe “God in an Idol”. We never touch the idol or the person who does all the sacred work of the temple.
Once I did that in Kerala, the man said something to me in Malayalam; I don’t know and went to take a bath. I was like what the shit. I heard the same words when I was passing in front of a Toddy shop. Those made me realize the diversity which makes us live and think different even in the same soil.
Some of the boys were as small as a pig, smoking Marijuana in front of the temple and spreading their vulgar words into the air. So of them were even dancing and commenting to the porn movies they were watching. The situation was really getting weird. I could see the young kids turning into a devil with the blessings of the god. They opened up a bottle of Beer and started gulping the entire bottle down their throat.
Gob tried to stop them but it was in vain, when they rained him with bad words. We thought it would be better to move to other place quiet and enjoy the beauty of this place.
Let’s move, I said while I gave a final look at those guys.
Sushi and Gob grabbed their bags and followed my lead. We went to the other side of the hill where it was much quieter. We sat on a big rock and kept our bags to the side. We looked at each other and all we could see was the pity look on each of our face.
We tried avoiding looking at the temple but still we could hear the loud music playing from the broken speaker set of a mobile phone.
So what’s up with the college? Sushi interrupted. With a varied pause, I replied “Nothing man, going well”
What is it yaar? Sushi asked. Nothing man and I tried to close my eyes.
We need to stop that shit, Gob said in a heavy tone.
He mopped his face and the final mark of chandan on his forehead got mixed with his sweat and vanished.
Wait, Wait what are we goanna do? I asked him.
“Let’s kick some ass”, Gob took his bag and placed it back on his shoulder and waited for us to make our move.
I looked at Sushi who already started fighting with his sweat.
Let’s do it man, what is more to think about it Gob’s words started beating my ear drums.
We started walking towards the temple. My fear had already conquered my anger which left me with weak hands and legs. I got a feeling of walking without hands and legs.
Gob leaded our way to the front with me and Sushi backing him up.
It was more like getting ready to run when anything gets serious.
Stop this!!!Gob said in a high tone.
I never thought Gob could say this louder.
It took a couple of seconds for them to understand what is happening.
They looked at us with their half slept eyes and one of them asked Kya hua Kaalia?
Gob’s eyes started bulging out like an egg coming out from a hen. “Dekh isse gussa aa raha heh”one of them giggled from behind. They all started laughing as if world may end in a minute.
I knew if world won’t end up in a min, these boys surely be.
Gob moved towards the cluster without even substantiating if we were backing him up.
We took our steps towards the crowd.
Gob already slapped a boy who was half his height. He fell like a bird who got hit with a bullet.
For a moment I thought he was dead. His fingers were shaking like a dog’s tail.
Some of them ran after they saw this boy’s condition.
Gob took hold of two of the boys and started asking “Now tell who is Kaalia”
One of the boys took the beer bottle in his hand and started pointing towards me.
“I have become so numb”, my cell phone started ringing.
I was so numb; it took me a second to realize it was Linkin Park jamming from my cell phone.
My friend from hell and the boy broke that bottle in my head.
I slowly opened my eyes. My head was so wet. I just took my hand and rubbed it through my hair. It was wet like the soil after the rain.
I could feel water all over my face. I opened my eyes and saw Sushi pouring water at me from a bottle.
I quickly got into my feet and saw Gob sleeping like a small baby.
What happened? Sushi asked in a surprise.
What happened to the boy who broke a bottle at my head? I asked.
Which boy and what bottle? Sushi replied in confusion.
The Kids sitting at the temple, I replied
I don’t know. You two slept like a beast so did I.
So we dint stop them? I asked.
What the shit are you blabbering about?
Nothing, I replied and smiled at Gob who was still sleeping like a beast.
