June 2010

Rehearsals are going on apace: Merrie England (yet another Grimms’ revival of a bygone, successful comic opera) is providing an interesting challenge – prepare to be stirred by ‘The Yeomen of England’ and ‘O Peaceful England’! The Pirates of Penzance also provides stirring moments – ‘Hail Poetry’ is impressive – as well as the familiar Gilbert and Sullivan topsy-turvy fun. Family Friends is an independent local charity established in 1995. They provide free and confidential support to families who have children aged 0 to 13 years. Their aim is to provide short term support to families facing difficult times and enable them to get back on their feet. Every year they help hundreds of families and in 2009 they were awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary service.

But even before you have the pleasure of this year’s Grimmbourne, there is another concert – with which the Grimms are associated – that will also delight you.

Featuring Ascot Brass Saturday 26 June 7.30pm – grounds open for picnicking 6.00pm Shiplake College, Shiplake, Henley on Thames RG9 4BW Raising funds for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society Call 01628 501547 or fundraising@nras.org.uk (tickets £10, concessions £6, group bookings of 10+ £80) Ascot Brass made history last year when they became the first non-military band to play at Royal Ascot. This involved the band providing music throughout the day for racegoers in the Silver Ring – and obviously they were so successful that they will be playing for Royal Ascot again this year! We have, of course, raised funds for NRAS ourselves in the past, as you may remember, and its founder, Ailsa, and a staff member, Lorraine (a ‘resting’ Grimmie), have sung in several Grimmbournes.
