Sep 15, 2010 @ 05:26 PM Newton ² The Newton Public Schools will receive $172K in Race to the Top funds from the federal government, Superintendent David Fleishman announced at the Sept. 13 School Committee meeting. Newton is one of 275 school districts that have met the requirements to receive money from the federal initiative. ³Not all districts receive race to the top funding,´ Fleishman said. ³We are happy to have the funding and look forward to using it wisely and strategically.´ Fleishman said a task force has been formed to determine how the funding will be spent over the next four years. The amount of funding was determined by preliminary figures released by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. To qualify for funds for Race to the Top, schools districts are required to provide a memo of understanding with signatures from the superintendent, School Committee chairman and the teacher¶s union president. The 275 qualified school districts will share a sum of $250 million over four years, which will be distributed based on the Title I funding formula for education aid. The formula considers the size of the school district and makeup of its students. Laura Paine can be reached at lpaine@cnc.com. Copyright 2010 Newton TAB. Some rights reserved
