PROCEDURE

Preliminaries
1. Students were been adequately supervised.
2. The pump discharge valve and suction valves is turned to fully open and motor
speed being controlled control to zero.
3. The electrical supply and motor drive switch is turned. Motor control knob
being slowly adjusted to around half way position. Any possible leaks in the
system have been checked as well as all gauges etc. The motor speed being
reduced back to zero. The apparatus is ready for tested.

Actual Experiment

1. The suction valve is opened and discharge valve have been closed. Maximum
pump speed N1 is taken by adjusting speed control to 50 %.
2. Discharge valve is fully opened and water is allowed to circulate. Note the
volume of the flow indicated and suitable increments in flow is decided to give
adequate sample point (about 15 points from zero until maximum flow).
3. The discharge valve have been closed (corresponding to no flow). All the
measurements being taken when the measured readings are steady.
4. To give the first increment in volume flow, the discharge valve have been
opened slightly. Measurements have been taken when readings are steady.
5. Step (4) is repeated. When the valve have been fully open consider it as the final
measurement.
6. The entire experiment being repeated at pump speed correspond to speed control
position of 75% and 100%.
DISCUSSION

The experiment is conducted to determine centrifugal pump performance

characteristic by for several set of speed centrifugal pump. Efficiency is the benchmark
of our experimental and theoretical result. We gain the efficiency by the mathematical
representations that were given to us by the lab instructor. Which in turn realize by our
data that we gather in the experimental stage namely the torque, the water height
difference, pump suction and delivery pressure.

50% of Pump speed.

We plot the graph of water head Q (m) versus the volume flow rate (m3/s), the
graph show that the head pump gradually decreased with the increased of volume flow
rate. Next, we plotted the graph for shaft power (kW) versus volume flow rate, the
higher of shaft power, the higher volume flow rate.

After that we plot the graph the volume flow rate versus efficiency. The
efficiency increase when the volume flow rate increase but the efficiency decrease
when the volume flow rate reach 0.0017 m3/s.

75% of Pump speed.

The graph water head versus volume flow rate is same with the previous speed
of pump, which the water head decrease when the volume flow rate increase. Next we
plot the graph of shaft power (kW) versus volume flow rate (m3/s). The shaft power
increase directly proportional to volume flow rate until it reach 0.0015 m3/s of volume
flow rate. For the next graph which is efficiency versus volume flow rate. The
efficiency increased directly proportional to volume flow rate until it reach 0.0015
m3/s. Unfortunately, the efficiency decreased after the volume flow rate reach 0.00258
m3/s.
100 % of Pump speed.

We plot the same graph for 100 % of pump speed, and the result is slightly
difference. The water head increase when the volume flow rate increase. Next we plot
the graph shaft power versus volume flow rate. The shaft power is increase directly
proportional with volume flow until it reach 0.0022 m3/s value of volume flow rate.
Futhermore, the efficiency is increase directly proportional with volume flow rate until
it reach 0.0022 m3/s. After that value, the efficiency slightly decrease.
