# Osmosis Laboratory Report

Result
Four bar charts below shown the mass and volume of the jellies
and the potatoes that were measured before and after the experiment.
Before doing an experiment, jelly 1 have weight of 2.32 g and volume
of 2 ml, jelly 2 have a weight of 2.74 g and volume of 2 ml, jelly 3 have
weight of 2.75 g and volume of 2 ml, potato 1 have weight of 2.12 g
and volume of 2 ml, potato 2 have weight of 2.25 g and volume of 2 ml,
and potato 3 have weight of 1.40 g and volume of 2 ml. After the
experiment, for the weight and volume of jelly 1 is 3.59 g and 4 ml, for
jelly 2 is 2.07 g and 2 ml, for jelly 3 is 2.81 g and 2 ml, for potato 1 is
2.68 g and 3 ml, potato 2 is 1.69 g and 2 ml, and for potato 3 is 1.39 g
and 1 ml.

Overall, the weight and the volume of jelly and potatoes showed
that it was based on the concentration of water of the surrounding
environment. This experiment was taken to study how will the weight
and volume of the potatoes and jelly changed after putting it in the
different surrounding environments, such as, salt water and distilled
water. The change in the jelly and potatoes put in the salt water had
decreased its weight (Jelly = -0.67, Potato = -0.56) while the weight of
the jelly and potatoes put in the water had increasing its weight (Jelly
= +1.27, Potato = +0.56). However, for the volume of the jelly and
potatoes put in the salt water hadn’t change its volume while the jelly
and potatoes in distilled water had increasing its volume (Jelly = +2,
Potato = +1).

At first, our hypothesis is that the volume of the jelly and potato
that in the salt water will decrease, the volume of the jelly and potato
in the distilled water will increase, and the volume and weight of jelly
and potato that in the air won’t change. The result was that some of
our hypothesis is correct which it was the weight and volume of jelly
and potato in distilled water, the weight of the jelly and potato in salt
water, and the volume of jelly that is in the air. However, the wrong of
our hypothesis is that the volume of jelly and potato isn’t decrease, the
volume of potato in the air, and the weight of potato and jelly in the
air. This experiment directly related to the Osmosis which it was said
that the water with high concentration will move to the lower
concentration. The concentration of jelly and potato is more than the
concentration of distilled water but its concentration is less than the
salt water.
During the jelly and potato was in the salt water, the
concentration of jelly and potato is less than the concentration of salt
water. Therefore, the water in the jelly and potato moves out from
itself to balance itself with the environment. This is called ‘Hypertonic
solution’.
During the jelly and potato was in the distilled water, the
concentration of jelly and potato is more than the concentration of the
distilled water. Therefore, the water that is in the distilled water moves
in the jelly and potato to make a balance. This is called ‘Hypotonic
solution’.
The possible sources of error were that when we measured the
volume of the jelly and the potato, we need to put it in the water to
measure its volume. Moreover, the weight of the jelly or the potatoes
might not accurate because there was a wind while we measure the
weight of the jelly and potato. Therefore, the jelly and potato that in
the air or control variable won’t be able to be the control variable
because the first weight and the last weight might not accurate enough
and it might absorb the water already. We can improve it by use other
method to measure the volume or use other liquid that don’t have a
reaction with the jelly and potato and improve it by change the place
that we measure the jelly and potato so that there won’t have the
disturbance while weighting the object so the weight that come out
will be more accurate.
Conclusion
The result of this experiment is the same as the theory of
Osmosis. However, some of my hypothesis was rejected because there
are some mistakes during measure the volume and weight of the
object.
