Israel advises Ukraine to forget its history

January 14, 2011

President of Israel Shimon Peres advised Ukraine to forget the story, in order not to repeat the
mistakes of the past in the future. He said this during a lecture in Kyiv.

"I would ask me to advise Ukraine, I would say: forget history, history is not important at all.
They say: learn the story, so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past, and I will say it is
nonsense. You will not be able to repeat the mistakes of the past, you will make new ones. There
is nothing to teach here in this story, "he said.

In so doing, the President of Israel noted that historians have to study historical books. Perez
also believes that the spiritual past, the heritage of culture and literature must be preserved.

"And the rest can be discarded, it does not matter," - he added.

Correspondent.
A correspondent for the BBC's Ukrainian service in Dnipropetrovsk, Vadim Ryzhkov, said the
Jewish community believes the visit of the Israeli president is a sign of the growing
international authority of their community, which they themselves call the most powerful in
Ukraine.

The secretary of the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk Oleg Rostovtsev as proof of such
influence is the fact that millionaire Igor Kolomoisky recently headed the Board of the
Association of Jewish Communities of the whole of Europe, and his business partner and
community chairman Gennadiy Bogolyubov funded the construction of a pavilion for storing
the scrolls of the Tory near the Wall of Cry in Jerusalem.

Yitzhak Shneerson, who was repressed under Soviet rule. The seventh and last Lubawitz rebbe
Menachem-Mendel Schnejerson, the spiritual leader of the Hasidic Habad movement, who lived
in the United States, considered Dnipropetrovsk to be his hometown.
According to our correspondent, there are many wealthy people among the followers of the
Hasidic Hasidism, and the influence of the Jewish community in Dnipropetrovsk is very
noticeable.
Entrepreneurs - members of the Jewish community build hotels in Dnipropetrovsk, shopping
malls, they own many businesses.
