COMPRESSION PLANT

Nitrogen, oxygen and argon are produced from the air separation unit and stored in large tanks
in liquid form. The product is then decanted from the tanks into road tankers for transportation
to the compression bay. At the compression bay the liquid is decanted into tanks for storage.
The liquid is then drawn from tanks using a pump and is converted to gas at the vaporizer and
then compressed into cylinders.

Bulk gases stored at the compression bay are nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Gases that
are compressed at compression bay are medical oxygen, industrial oxygen, medical carbon
dioxide, industrial carbon dioxide, Entonox, medical nitrous oxide, Argo shield, nitrogen.

Activities done at the compression bay include cylinder maintenance, high pressure cylinder
filling, flask filling.

CYLINDER RECEIPTS AND CYLINDER MAINTENANCE

On receipts, empty cylinders are sorted in order to remove faulty cylinders, foreign cylinders,
cylinders due to pressure tests from circulation. Cylinders that require painting are also
removed from circulation and send to the painting bay for painting. Cylinders are due for
pressure tests once every ten years. Cylinders have test rings on their necks and they help in
cylinder sorting. The test ring indicates the year the last pressure test was done. The test ring is
placed on the cylinder when maintenance is done and every year the color of the test ring
changes.

Cylinder maintenance is divided into internal tests and pressure tests.

INTERNAL TEST

The internal test involves using a light to check the inside of a cylinder and compare what you
see to what is on the chart. The valve of the cylinder is removed and the cylinder is checked
using the light to see if it has foreign materials or if the cylinder has any corrosion. If the
cylinder has foreign materials it is placed on the cleaning machine to clean. All cylinders that are
send for maintenance undergo internal test.

PRESSURE TEST

Pressure test is carried on every cylinder once every ten years. The test that is done is the
hydraulic. It is done to check if the cylinder is still able to withstand set pressures so that it is
safe for use. The pressure that is used for cylinders is above normal filling pressures.

The following are the steps taken for hydraulic pressure testing.
